My friend has a simple amp (Squier SP-10) and it sucks. For a couple of reasons, but one of the major ones is that it has a drive channel but no gain knob. Does anyone know how to wire a potentiometer (and what value it should be) for a SS gain knob?

I guess you could add some asymetrical clipping diodes somewhere... probably be better getting a cheap distortion pedal though

Yeah he has a DS-1, but you can get much heavier stuff out of an amp's overdrive.

Youre not going to be able to just wire a gain knob into a cheap practice amp. Way easier to get a pedal.
