I can get a deal on an EMG 81/85 combo at my local store. Should I put them in my Schecter Gryphon, which is mainly used for downtuned metal, or my Dean ML, which is used for all metal in standard, and anything else. Or should I get this cheap Epi G400 and put them in there (it would only cost about $270 to get the epi and the EMGs)?

Smartest thing I've ever read on these boards!

The 85 is one of the most underrated bridge pickups! Especially for downtune metal!

Aren't 85's usually used for Neck and 81's for bridge?

Its used and Im good friends with the owner of the guitar shop, I just bought $700 worth of gear from him, so hes giving me a deal. And I dont want to go with mismatching the active and passives, so its EMG's in one or the other if I decide to put them in one of the guitars.

And have passives in the other positions of the guitars too?
Thats way more trouble than it's worth.
Not a good idea at all.

Put them in the Schecter.

EMGs and Blackouts are not equivalent, but neither is better. The Blackouts are more organic, but the EMGs are more edgy.

He didn't ask for your opinion on blackouts...please...stay on topic...

I would slap 'em in the Epiphone if I were you. Set up right, it's a pretty nice guitar, and with the EMG's it will sound great! I'm biased though, I will almost always recommend any option that increases the size of your guitar arsenal!

As I Lay Dying uses 85/85 combos in their guitars.

It's downtuned metalcore.

I'd stay away from active pickups unless you have a guitar of higher quality. I find they sound sub par in cheap or mid-range guitars. I don't want to be a dick, that's just how I feel about them. If you don't like the tone of your guitars, getting passive pickups with high output is probably a better solution.

I agree, also to add in that EMGs in a subpar guitar will still sound pretty cheap and nasty in a sub-par amp, especially solid-states.

Actives are more designed for use with tube-amps.
