Well, I recently learned the drums (around four months or so ago, by Christmastime). I have always wanted to be a drummer, and with my new 'set' I had received, I was learning in no time. Now, I play drums very well, I can do rolls and fills, double kicks and odd time signatures, etc.. The only problem with my first drum set is this: It's the one that came with the game Rock Band. Yeah. I learned drums from Rock Band. And now I'm purchasing my first REAL set tomorrow. So Pit, am I pathetic, or awesome?

I dont see the problem, drumming is really just timing. So regardless of if you learned drumming from a video game or an actual drum kit doesn't really matter, guitar is a bit different. But I know someone who couldn't afford a drum kit so he practiced on pots and pans and ****, so don't sweat it. Good job.

wait so you know you're a good drummer but you only play on a rock band "set"?

EDIT: and how can you do double kicks with it?

I can't remember the brand offhand, but it starts with a C. I'm getting it from a friend brand new for 225 (he's not the smartest) with full setup and Zildjian cymbals. Woo.
#10
who cares how you learned atleast you learned an instrument. I too have rock band and even though i started drumming before playing the game, but only for about a month, the game still helped me become a better drummer even though its really nothing like a real drum set it still helps. so bottom line is no your not pathetic.
#11
you can probably make the move pretty easily... i played the song "maps" on rock band once, and then went to a real drumset in my garage and could play it..

drumming is easy to do like that i think

I do that sometimes.

TS, I didn't knw rockband has a doublekick?
But it shouldn't really matter, it will take some time to adapt to probably, but you will pick it up fast I imagine.

I also play drums in a punk rock/indie band. I use someone else's set. A lot of people have positively commented my playing abilities.

Actually, playing rock band drums on expert is a lot like real life, no joke. Watch Kevin Peirera tear it up with Coheed and Cambria on youtube.

This is how I got more of a rythymic feel, by playing Rock Band's drums.

While it is fairly realistic, GHIV's sets will basically be exactly the same as the songs, it was in an interview video I saw. Rock Band will teach you "technique", as in rythyms, keeping time, etc., but it won't exactly teach you songs.

You should add a poll option for "Good for you."

That's how I learned to play drums. I don't have a kit myself, but my cousin had Rock Band and I would mess around on it a a lot.

This is the pit. Doesn't have to be about guitars. Also when I say double kick I mean hitting the kick pedal twice quickly.
#22
hahahahahaha this is very lame........being good at a video game really has no correlation with being able to do it on a real instrument.........
if you would spend half as much time playing a real instrument as playing these games you could do the real thing.........

I dont mean to beat this dead horse........but it is true

I mean like the most basic stuff like working the bass drum. I didn't mean anything elaborate.

The RB drum kit is similar to a real drum kit (at least, moreso than the guitar/bass), so I guess it could work.

It's helped me with rhythm.

Well, if you actually are very good at drums from learning on rock band, then . But, it's quite a bit different from real drums... not sure you're as good as you say you are....

Whatever.. I believe you.. you have nothing to gain from lieing on an internet forum.
sup?
#33
Haha thanks. I've still got a lot to learn though. Now with my real set I'll become even better.
#34
The drummer of Immortal, Horgh, who is also the man in my avatar, did not own a set of drums when he started playing for Immortal. He practiced with pillows and Abbath actually had to show him how to play blast beats.

So I think if he can learn with pillows you can learn with Rock Band.
