hey hey
so i'm considering starting to play psychobilly, which i know will require some sort of upright bass
but i have no idea where to go from there
what specifications does this particular genre tend to require?
fule size? 3/4?
particular woods?
and am i right in thinking that a proper double bass is better than one of those stick-like EUBs?

Well, the differance from a 3/4 to a full size is not sound, but size. But an upright is not something you just pick up. It requires hours of practice to become good on it. And generally upright players don't buy cheaper basses. Your probabally going to pay at least $2,000. Most likely closer to $3,000. You want a solid top, which will probabally be spruce.

Electric Uprights are not ment to sound like upright basses, they sound more like an electric, they're just played like uprights. Don't buy one of those.

i'm thinkin' 3/4 is most popular, but bigger is better. check out these boy's for what your looking for. Jimbo Wallace rules psychobilly.

oh right cheers

that's REALLY expensive, i was expecting more like 500 or something
i might have to do like i did with bass, buy something really cheap to learn on then get something better once i eventually get good

thanks

Another great player to check out it Geoff Kresge (I believe that's how to spell it...) of Tiger Army.

You might be able to find a cheap, junky practice upright on eBay.

Yeah, my beginner upright is around $2500. It's really low-end, too.

I would reccomend renting a decent double bass and put that rental money towards eventually buying it. That's what the majority of beginning players do.

Frankly, a $500 upright would be close to unplayabe. Hell, that's if you can even find one for that cheap.

you could probably make do with a fretless bass with flatwounds and a sponge under the strings.

it won't have the look, or quite the sound, but it will be easier and cheaper.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

Well, if he's playing psychobilly, I'm guessing there's going to be lots and lots of upright slapping, which is next to impossible to do on an electric.

You're right, though. It's better than nothing.

You're not going to get anything for $500. Not an EUB, not an acoustic upright. Naught. Pieces of crap will sound awful and play horribly. You will not enjoy playing it.

Keep in mind that the strings on an upright are 8" longer than typical bass strings, and that there are absolutely NO position markers on them at all.

I was looking at a used Warwick Vampyre LTD 5'er for about $200. I went home to grab my wallet and came back and some jerk with an epic beard got it already..
