I'm fairly certain I'm not the only TG reader here. So who else does. And what do we think? And who would win in a fight, UG or TG?

TG is for beginners.

GT focuses on getting better at guitar.

Guitarist tells you what to save up for.

UG ... is awesome.

Total Guitar is RUBBISH!!

I used to buy it the whole time, but its gone too metal influenced AND the reviews are garbage "this guitar snarls like johnny rotten" UGH total tripe.

Sounds like they've taken the advice from Jeremy Clarkson's book on How To Review Things Without Actually Saying Anything About It At All.

Still, Top Gear is at least entertaining.

TG is the only one I really could get into, but the reviews are ****ing awful
(they gave the Line 6 Spider 5/5...)
And the songs they choose to transcribe are usually really bad and barely challenging (the entire BFMV discography anyone?)
ohai little sig.

I used to get it, but it's become even more crap. I've not seen a decent song tabbed in it for months. Shame that if I want to get Guitar Techniques I have to go to Manchester.

I agree, but Clarkson is the man AND entertaining.

TG is a magazine AND toilet paper.

I like TG, mainly for guest lessons, video lessons, and the songs it tabs.
I also read Guitarist magazine, but that doesn't always have a similar amount of content, which is why I prefer both.

I get easily bored when there are just the facts. Total Guitar is like a story to me so i enjoy reading it more. All the other guitar mags just weren't envolping enough for me to get into. You have to decypher TG to read it...however i've just cancelled my subscription because i won a competition and they wouldn't let me claim my prize...(anyone remeber my thread about it?)

what did you win?

Also Guitar Buyer FTW.... at least I learn something from that magazine.

Unlike Total Guitar which teaches me how to play a Greenday song every 2 months and tells me how brillaint every bit of (crap) gear they get in their office is amazing.

All guitar magazines are uniformly awful.

They either target n00b teenage KSE fans, or 40 year old SRV fans. All are extremely biased and musically ignorant.
#21
i live TG although i do admit that they absolutely bum Dean and line 6 which are ****, however the lessons and tabs are good and the fact that its gone metal is good for me cos im a metal head.

I'll agree to this, most guitar magazines are biased.

To the person that said they haven't seen a decent song tabbed in months...I've seen a few good songs, but I don't get it for the songs...I read it, which is what you do with magazines.

Also, I enjoy just randomly jamming around with the backing tracks, I recomend it as it's a good method of developing your soloing.

Shit, so that's where I've been going wrong all these years! I thought you were supposed to eat the bloody thing! Thank you so much for correcting me.

On a less sarcastic note, I'll point out that the articles in it are usually pretty poor, so I only got it so I could learn the tabs, which is what you do with magazines with tabs in. They're not just for decoration, you know.

Some of the articles are quite boring.
The tabs are useful though - but only if every bloody song wasn't an obscure song I've heard of that has some stupid tuning >_<. I can't play those songs thanks to them tunings!

TG is ****. Entertaining, but completely bums Trivium, A7X, BFMV etc.

It would seem TG has a fetish for sell-out metalcore bands.

im so **** hot at guitar i couldnt possibly improve (joke no1 take that serious)

I like Total Guitar. I had a monthly subscription for christmas. But it used to be way better than it is now, less 'metal' and more well rounded content. It might just be that I'm not 16 anymore so I want more mature content. I never liked Guitarist because there wasn't enough to learn just loads of reviews and interviews. Not seen Guitar Techniques in a while. It used to either be good or bad never in-between. I like TG because you always get a CD which has something useful on it i.e. Guest lessons or backing tracks which are alright.

TG owns UG as TG is written and run by professional and well learned guitarists who've got music degrees and can teach at the highest level. The magazine itself might be a bit mundane at times but the guitarists involved in TG aren't. They have more combined musical and guitar based knowledge than most UGers put together. That's why they write the mags and we buy them. Just because they target a younger audience doesn't make it worse than UG. The average UGer is about 14 or 15. Go figure...

July's Guitar Techniques magazine:

Transcriptions
  • Joe Satriani - Midnight
  • The Pretenders - Kid

Features:
  • Four Faces of Clapton - Bluesbreakers, Cream, solo and unplugged styles.
  • Modern Acoustic Styles - tapping, slapping, percussive playing

Lessons:
  • Blues - Otis Grand
  • Classic Rock - AC/DC
  • Reggae - one drop
  • American Icons - The Band's Robbie Robertson
  • Country Essentials - chicken picking
  • Creative Rock - 'inside-outside' notes (using chromaticism in jazz)
  • Jazz - Lydian Augmented
  • Acoustic - John Martyn
  • RGT - Acoustic Grade 4

Plus album and DVD reviews

Plus 'Q&A Theory Godmother' answering readers' questions on theory.

I used to read it but stopped as in the last year it got really bad, really fast!
Looking to buy a Fender Jagstang, u sellin?
#31
TG is really, really poor. Their reviews are useless, and their interviews are just the same old dumb questions.
#32
are they still going? christ i bought the first editions of TG ang GT in 94. No point now you get crap tabs and crap reviews UG is far better. Kids now dont know how good they have it with UG and guitar pro.
#33
I used to be subscribed, but amn't any more, it's totally not worth a fiver and they just re hash the same articles, reviews and photos. and the gay photoshopping they do and the "rawk" thing... it's lame as.
UG's free, and you get to rant about things you don't like

I get Tg. But only to kind of.. read it?
It's like a guitarists news kind of thing?
I never really learn anything from it.
And I agree with the guy that says magazines are bias, as you can see when TG gets too many complaints "Stop transcribing metal and doing metal articles" etc, they do a whole indie issue, or another musical style, then fall back into generic metalcore and balls.
It's entertaining but I can easily see why people hate it.

UG should make a magazine....

TG said stuff it up your cunt
