I'm trying to learn scales without using the box method, as I feel I won't really learn any of the theory and that will set me back. So far, I've tried memorizing the notes for each fret and i've got half the strings down solid. I've only tried with the major scale so far, and I begin by constructing the scale and writing down the note names. Then I try to play it at a certain position.

My question is, is this a decent way to learn scales or is it going to take me forever?

It will take you a while, but it will be better for you in the long run if you're wanting to learn all the theory side of things.

it'll take some time to remember everything. i suggest that you just lock yourself in your room and study the modes. the try to improvise with all the different models

Not unless you find it too difficult...which you obviously don't because you've memorised the first three strings.
Just make sure you understand all the theory behnind what you're doing, otherwise you've missed the point of what you're doing :P

Try practicing the scales on something like piano or a horn. An instrument where you can't just memorise a shape and move it around.
I memorised all my scales using a clarinet, so I have to know all the notes individually.

My method is just knowing the scale notes on a certain key, and then I find those notes on the guitar and just improvise around.

I do believe it's a waste of time trying to memorize all the patterns or CAGED system for all scales and that will only limit yourself.

Unfortunately, some people find it hard to just 'improvise around' and memorising a scale and learning about why notes fit together like they do, tend to help them.
