Your favorite Clean Metal tone, and your favorite Distorted Metal tone.

Please tell me if someones made this before!!!

Clean tone:

Nothing Else Matters - esque. Use the Humbucker/ Single Coil combo if you have it on your guitar.
Drive: 3
Bass: 9
Mid: 10
Treble: 7
Reverb: 3/4

Distorted Tone:

Raining Blood - esque. Use the bridge humbucker.
Drive – 8
Bass – 9.5
Mid – 2.5
Treble – 7
Reverb – 2

EDIT: Also say what amp!!!

I use a Line 6 Spider III 30 watt amp

Heavy Tone
Gain: 10
Bass: 8
Mid: 4
Treble: 10
Reverb: 0-4 depending on song.
Bridge Humbucker

But it changes depending on what im playing
#3
Distortion - For riffs it's the bridge 'bucker, for solos, the neck humbucker:
Amp =

Gain: 5 1/2
Bass: 4
Treble: 5
Mids: 6

Pedal (BOSS SD-1) =

Tone: 1 o'clock
Level: Max
Drive: Backed off all the way.

P.S. I only use the SD-1 to tighten up my low end.

Clean - Bridge and Neck Humbuckers:

Bass: 3
Mids: 4
Treble: 6

Only have one reverb control - always at 2 1/2.

Mid-driven distortion and sparkly cleans FTW! (Oh noez mah settings r on teh webz!)

On my amp its
Bass-flat
Mids-+4
Treble-+1

On my bass it's
Bass-2:00
Mids-3:30
Treble-1:30
Pan: slightly biased toward neck soapbar or solo'd bridge depending on style

But there's one special thing that I use that drastically changes tone. I'm not tellin you it though.

I'm pretty sure there's a whole thread on guitar tone settings, but while I'm here, does anybody have any good Decapitated or At the Gates tones?

Anyways, what I use (Assuming the lowest= -10, highest= 10)

amp:

gain-4
treble-2
mids-2
bass-8

Distortion pedal (electro-harmonix metal muff)

treble-10
mids- -2
bass- 5
distortion- 5

played through neck pickup.
#6
The only true Clean metal tone is to set gain to 0 bass to 5, mid to 7, trebs to 8 1/2, and presence to 6 1/2. If you have low end boost or something similar turn that to 6 or 5 depending on how u like ur stuff. Clean metal means 0 on gain ... and i play it on the neck pickup, sometimes with my coils split to add a lil more flavor.

low lead or something can be low on gain (i.e. 1-4) and thats what they'd use for those slower metal solos like in all the thrash metal songs where they breakdown and have the slow sections (Master of Puppets, lots of testament songs)

high lead... is for solos during faster parts of songs where the rhythm backing is heavily distorted as well, and so the lead guitars solo needs to stand out even with as high distortion, and usually requires about the same lvl of distortion as the rhythm but with more mids and highs and less bass, and usually switching to the neck humbucker pickup.

crunch distortion is for rhythm (generally during verses and bridges, etc.) and that is high distortion also, probably about 6-10 depending on song and the sound u want... 8 or 9 on bass, 3-8 on mids depending if you want scooped or not, and 5-9 or 10 on trebs if you play some melodic stuff in there too.

thats how i roll.

I have a Spider so feel free to ignore my opinion.

I use the following for Distortion (on the Insane setting, the only good one on that piece of ****)-
Bass-4-5
Mid-6-7
Treble-7-8
Gain-7-10

And I don't ever use clean tones. The "Clean" setting on the Spider has a ****load of effects, I have to use overdrive with the gain turned all the way down to get an actual clean tone. Because of that I don't use clean tones very much and I sure as hell don't remember the settings I use.

Here's my Line 6 Gearbox settings for a metal tone that isn't so distorted that chords sound crap. I guess its borderline rock but eh.... i use it for opeth rhythms and such too.

I think it came about from tweaking a Iron Maiden preset.

amp model- Brit J-800 1990
cab- 1978 Brit Celest T-75

Drive 74%
Bass 50%
Mid 96%
Treble 86%
Presence 84%

with some EQ (slight mid boost, bass reduction)
Reverb- medium hall
predelay 65%
decay 23%
tone 10%
mix 12%

Compressor
Threshold -12dB
Gain 1dB

and for leads i engage the stompbox, either tube screamer (gain + boost) or Fuzz Pi (outrageous lead tone) and the Gate to contain the ridiculous feedback the Pi fuzz makes.

I won't bother posting EQs, because that'll differ from amp to amp anyways...

Immortal's clean tone is pretty much awesome. Distorted is a bit harder... Strapping Young Lad, maybe.

Yeah, Immortals clean tone is the best clean tone ever.

I like a lot of tones...I dunno. I guess Matt Pike's Les Pauls through Orange amps sounds great.

im not sure how to get it, but alexi laiho's lead tone is PRETTY badass

and my favorite clean tone is opeth's classical guitar tone
#20
Alexi's tone is cack. Anytime, anywhere.

Favorite tone is Jeff Loomis, both clean and distorted. I'd try to get his tone on my crap amp, but I don't have an 'Awesome' knob...
Dyer's Eve is awesome, and has an abnormally large penis, which doesn't act as any hinderance to his everyday life despite its freakishly large size.

Awesome.

Massive set of blasphemies about to ensue. Mind you, I kinda like shatty tones... at least that's what others tell me

First off, all Metallica tones since the black album are nix. You cannot dial an amp that way, 'cuz it's all post production magicks, unless you are using the Vetta built-in tones.

I like the guitar tone on BLS's Sonic Brew. It sounds exactly like the record should, raw Marshall and drunk. AE's Wages of Sin has some pretty good tone. Gojira's FMTS. Death's Symbolic and SoP. I like Fear Factory's tone on Obsolete. The first four Korn albums (what did I tell you about ensuing blasphemies? ) Jerry Cantrell's Degradation Trip. Megadeth Youthanasia. Pantera, TGSTK & RTS. Scar Symmetry, PBP. Testament Demonic, Gathering.

and, of course....

Opeth. Mikael could take a Sears Silvertone with 2 rusty strings through an old Crate and make it sound good. Steven Wilson too.

Justin Broadrick's various, expansive list of magical tones. Whatever he does.

A lot of Opeth's tones.

Mastodon's various tones.

Strapping Young Lad.

Gojira.

The list goes on, but those are some of my main favorites.

+1 to justin's tone.

i love his 'twangy' tone with a bit of overdrive, on 'mother earth' and 'old year'.
i've been trying to get that for a long time.

low. 3
mind. 6
high. 7
reverb. 5

works well on clean and overdrive.
it just makes everything 'clearer' to me.

No it doesn't.

The Line 6 Vetta has a gorgeous clean (no distortion) tone.

I always thought Line 6 had good cleans, but stupid factory preset distortions.

Marshall, on the other hand, pretty much has no clean tone whatsoever. Their cleans always sound a little "dusty" to me.

Fender the same way, but instead of "dusty," it's "fuzzy."

Yeah dude, the Twin's are awesome.

Fender also has this 1X12 tweed 50W tube amp that is the best sounding amp I've ever heard, but I can't remember the name of it...

Google time, I guess.

edit: damn, that was fast!

Blues Jr.

I was playin' a wine red Les Paul Studio through it, makin' feedback that sounded like whales crying. Definitely not a metal amp, but for light blues playing, I love it.

For sure. He just has a way with guitars.

I STILL want to know how he got that tone on "Friends are Evil". After further inspection, I've heard there IS a tiny bit of leftover distortion, but you have it have it turned up pretty loud to hear.

WHY, JUSTIN?! WHY MUST YOUR TONES BE SO ELUSIVE?!?!

Will do.

And as much as I like Matt Pike, HoF, and their/his tone...

It's pretty hard to make a good Les Paul put through a good Orange amp sound bad...
#40
^not if you turn everything up to 11 and keep blowing speakers!

My friend went and saw HoF in Santa Barbara some time ago... he said MP was playin' this nine-string guitar thing and he kept blowing speakers, but kept playin' anyway, never missing a beat. That's pretty badass.
