how exactly do you use em in playing metal? i see a lot of metal players use overdrive pedals in their gear and i've always wondered why. do you first put overdrive on the amp and then turn on the pedal on top of that to make it very gainy?

some pedals... mainly distortion pedals can get to high lvls of gain on their own. But since overdrive pedals use soft clipping vs hard clipping from distortion pedals its harder to reach higher levels.

So most people use an overdrive pedal on their gain channel on their amp to give it that nudge into metal territories

Overdrive pedals, with valve amps, can give an awesome volume boost, and gain boost, pushing the valves to break more, I think.
