I have a friend that doesn't like metal and I said I could get him to like it by making a CD that starts out light and each song following it will get progressively heavier. I don't know where to start so if anyone is bored enough or thinks it would be fun, try to make a list of songs to put on the CD, each one getting slightly heavier. Thanks.

Put on some Avenged Sevenfold....umm...Blinded In Chains, M.I.A.....
Then put Live Again by Silent Civilian
...umm Only for the Weak, The Quiet Place, Come Clarity by In Flames.
A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth..
later throw in Fixation on The Darkness, The End Of Heartache by Killswitch Engage.
Throw in some Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt.1, The Glass Prison
Also throw in some Nightwish...examples - Dead To The World, Ever Dream
Reconciliation by Pain of Salvation..
Elvenking - The Winter Wake album...coz everyone can enjoy awesome music.
if hes a total n00b...then put in sum metallica - Unforgiven, Whiskey in The Jar, Enter Sandman...
eh..thats it for now..that should get him started....
These are tried and tested songs btw...this is the **** n00bs will get into...

Edit:- as for the heaviest stuff...ummm there are just so many bands u could choose ranging from behemoth, nile to eluveitie, equilibrium....but that depends on if he really enjoys what he hears..

Get him to listen to Nile - they're pretty light so he'll probably like them.

I'm doing the same thing as you. So far I have a little bit of every sub-genre just to give the most exposure, starting with NWOBHM, sludge, then folk metal, power metal, thrash, death, and finally tech death.

Totally agree on starting it with Opeth, they're the perfect balance.

You could stick to stuff like take select tracks from the harder bands that do both growling and clean singing, like some btbam or Sikth
then bleed in some of The Faceless or Psycroptic.

try starting off with some ozzy-era sabbath, then some maiden and priest. from there you can go into some metallica, starting with some black album stuff and then going into lightning/puppets. from there you can throw in some rust in peace-era megadeth, old testament, then some slayer maybe. from there you can go into some kreator and low/demonic/the gathering-era testament. from there you can try some early death metal like death and from there going into some the more brutal stuff like cannibal corpse, suffocation, and nile. you can also try some stuff with a sing/growling/screaming mix, like opeth and into eternity. hope this helps at all.

get some folk metal there, I've noticed that people who don't listen to metal seem to like it the most

Eluveitie - Uis Elveti and Equilibrium - Met are good choices
also Týr, try Ramund Hin Unge or The Wild Rover

yes im with this guy,

some easy litening opeth without the growls then bleed in some with the growls and gojira seeing as its not fully growled. then some BTBAM from the colours album as thats probably their most accessible style, or some stuff like sikth/gorod/insomnium? then heavier to maybe to behemoth nile or vital remains

Try to start off with:

The Bard's Song - Blind Guardian
Forever - Stratovarius

Then put in some:

Hollow - Pantera
Cemetery Gates - Pantera

Then:

From Skin To Liquid - Cannibal Corpse
Lack of Comprehension - Death

Then do whatever the hell you want. Those are some ideas if you need help.

put some bodom on there(newer might work best for vocals) maybe blooddrunk(song)

put a song on there that changes from harsh to clean vocals, idk if id start on opeth right away because i find that deeper vocals, people dont like when first listening to metal. the band that comes to mind(and has also been recomended i see) is ensiferum, particularly the song into battle or something similar. trollhammeren(or however you spell it) works

put vampira by devin townsend or some other misc. townsend/SYL tracks

toward the end you MIGHT want to try something like the lotus eater

put formation of damnation by testament on it also because its like a light deeper growl and its very similar to standard heavy metal, if anything hed like something similar to this first

idk try some at the gates or something.

idk if will work on your friend but when i started i basically listened to wintersun, bodom, and there was like a random necrophagist song in there every once in a while, try it.

2 tracks:start with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, early Judas Priest.

1-2 tracks:then go to speed metal with: Helloween's first album, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, Cacophony, maybe even some venom to start him off into black metal territory

2-3 tracks (lighter thrash, than make it heavier/more death metal sounding)Thrash metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Kreator, Sepultura, Heathen, Sodom, Death Angel, Overkill

1-2 tracks Groove metal: Pantera, Machine Head, later Sepultura, later Overkill

2-3 tracks Black Metal: Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor

1-2 tracks folk metal: Ensiferum, Finntroll, Tyr, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow

1-2 tracks old school DM: Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel, etc.

1-2 tracks Melodic DM: Dark Tranquillity, Carcass (heartwork album), At the Gates, Wintersun etc.

2-3 tracks Prog Metal: Death, Atheist, Cynic, Blotted Science, Opeth, Watchtower, Pestilence

1-2 tracks New DM: Nile, Cryptopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Krisiun

1-2 tracks Tech DM: Necrophagist, Arsis, Anata, Psycroptic, Spawn of Possession, Quo Vadis

1 track Grindcore: earlier Carcass, Haemorrhage

1-2 tacks Brutal DM: Suffocation, Immolation, Dying Fetus, Yattering

that should just about do it. if theres anything else... think of it yourself

EDIT: forgot Doom/sludge... throw it in around groove metal imo, some great doom bands are: Candlemass, St. Vitus, Penance, Katatonia, Funeral
