So, I often participate in the argument consisting of
Person One (me) - A metalhead with a wide taste, NOT just revolving around metal however.
Person Two (a friend) - Very wide taste in music from every genre, the closest thing to metal probably being Led Zeppelin or The Prodigy.

Also a few others, pitching in their neutral or "both sides have valid points" comments.

The argument usually begins with me saying to another friend, a metalhead also, "So, <band name>'s new album is out soon, should be good, it's supposed to be more <musical device> and <musical idealogy> than the last album"

Person two will then say "God, how can you listen to that, its just noise"
several minutes later the argument ends with no victor, but its still quite fun

Any others been in this argument? If so, what are your techniques / pointers for defending Metal's honour?

When people say metal is just noise, I ask what they listen to and make very wide generalisations about it being all the same.

Just say: Yeah, I listen to that noise, but at least I don't sniff my sisters used underwear. Say it loud. Really loud. He'll never argue with you again.

EDIT: On the other hand, there is no point arguing about music and taste...

So, how is screaming any worst then just basicly talking over the same damm bass line for 10 minutes(*cough*rap). Just forget about stupid people who don't have taste in music... I figured out a LONG time ago that never turns out good.

Me <listen to a lot of genres, not so much metal, but I have pretty much every genre on my iPod>
Person 2 <will only listen to Pop Punk and insists on mugging off Hip Hop even though he listens to music aimed at pre teens>
Both 17 years old

Person 2 - says something stupid (Blink 182 are the best band ever, or hip hop is for wanabees)

Me - nodding in disaproval before saying shut up

u can always just state that what is considered noise is subjective. For example, you can state some forms of grindcore (sorry grindcore people) are noise to me, but some others are not (maybe power metal or something).

or u can just devle deeper into the subjective nature of what is noise and isnt. Some people may think classical music is all the same, but with a fine tuned ear, one begins to appreciate all the various techniques and styliings used.

The same can be said for metal, or even every other genre. One may think it is noise at first, but really begin to hear all the different aspects after years of listening. Or, you can just state (once again) that it is all subjective, and wild generalizations can be made about anything, but that does not make them true (dang people and simplifying reality)

lol. its music not a princess in a castle.

no one wins because you are arguing opinions, not facts and tangible ideas. its like arguing apples to bananas, except when it comes to opinions apples are bananas.

haha, i did think before putting that comment, but i like it
i do agree, but its the people who start the argument when they look at your iPod screen or overhear you talking who annoy me.

Some people are musically ignorant, but what can you do...

Being musicly ignorant=being close minded.

Nowadays it's nothing more then labels. Most of people just stick to their prefered genre just because of the fads. In other words: "Anything that doesn't sound like what I see on MTV=crap"

Usually, people aren't opened to bother listening to different stuff then what they are used to. A lot of times it's those people being scared of actually liking that new genre. But hey, what can you do.

It's just funny when they start dissing bands that happen to be big influences in general music/for a band that person happens to love.

"You know, you're t-shirt. Did you actually know that song was a cover from the band you just dissed?"

If he listens to the Prodigy, he can't say shit.

Hypocrite.

The problem with metal heads is that all they ever do is complain about how everyone else makes fun of metal. Just listen to the music, and stop interfering with others. If someone makes fun of you for listening to it put your headphones on and rock out. Don't go making threads about "Wahhh no one understands that I listen to metal"

you are thinking of one type of metal.
In my opinion i think the exact same thing about jazz (not the screaming) but i still respect it as a music genre that involves a lot of music knowledge

Lol? You seen me post a thread about it? I was just posting here because the obvious thing I usually hear is "I hate the screaming, it's not singing!" and that usually comes from rappers, which is why I said that comment.

And I don't only listen to metal, in fact I listen to pretty much anything, including rap itself so. Please don't make assumptions as to what I'm listening to.
