So, the stock 490R/490T set in my SG Special has gone microphonic on me, causing incredibly irritating high-pitched feedback (even standing fairly back from my amp) at any kind of volume anywhere near gigging level. As it stands, at any realistic distance from my amp with any decent amount of gain, it squeals in an extremely annoying manner pretty much as soon as I remove my hands from muting the strings totally.

I'd like to re-wax pot them myself, but I'm slightly afraid to (besides, I'm not good at soldering and I'm going to have a pro swap them out for a new set).

Either way, I've always thought the stock 490s were a bit muddy, anyway. So, I'd like to replace them.

I play pop-punk, general rock, and a bit of cleaner blues. So something that cleans up well with the volume down while still retaining good tone, I suppose.

As far as output goes, I need something on the same level as the stock 490s, perhaps even just a bit hotter. Again, though, something that cleans up well with the volume down.

Also--I think this goes without saying--something that's well-made and will be as un-microphonic as possible.

I have about $140 to spend on this little project; any suggestions?

Check out Rockfields. They are cheap and great sounding, I would have bought them recently but the guitar I wanted to put them in needed f-spaced. A set will run you $100.

Even cheaper would be Guitar fetish pick-ups but I have not tried them and some people say they are crappy.

How's this set of pickups? Seymour Duncan SH-4 Bridge and SH-2 Jazz Neck. I may be pickup-retarded, but I understand that Seymour Duncans are good pickups?

Duncans are good, but the JB is not everyone's cup of tea. I think it is too trebly and not enough clarity. I suggest maybe getting one of these...

We have a winner! Great combo. The SH-14 will have some great top end bark for pop punk - it loves SG's.
