I have a Stock Dean MLX and I plan on changing the pickups soon. I am just confused on what to get.

I am looking for something similar to a early Metallica sound.

The body is basswood and It will run through a Peavey Valveking 112.

This is my Signature.
Dimarzio Dactivator set or Seymour Duncan Custom/Full Shred.
Ibanez RG321MH (Air Classic/Tone Zone)
Fernandes Telecaster (Twang King/stock bridge pickup)
Blackstar HT-20 (Scumback 55 speaker/ Tung Sol tubes)
TC Electronic Nova Repeater
Lava Cables Clear Connect, Soar and Mini ELC
sorry if I sound patronizing, but early-metalica sound is characterised by scooped mids (I don't think it owes alot to thier pickups - Could be wrong of course!) Have you tried messing about with equalisation on the amp etc. etc ?
the only album to me that had a scooped sound was mop...everything else had mids
