My new band is getting ready to play our first show. We're mostly worried about bringing in a as big a crowd as possible. Anybody got any ideas on how to draw in a large crowd and how to grab as many fans as possible at a first show?

play a good show.. Well I don't advise to win the crowd with a sort of stage act on the first show. So try and confince them with some good music =D

dont worry about the first show to much, cause i guarantee it wont go accordingly, but u main priority for the first 2-3 is get everything under way and become accustom to it all then start promoting urself with posters and free 2 track demo cds and that

Open with a rock & roll classic that everyone has heard.

this, also do a few other covers for popular songs, but mix your own stuff in. If you want a garanteed audience, make sure you're supporting one of the big local bands who will be pulling in a bigish audience. And force your friends to go...they're your friends, they legally don't have a choice...

For your first show (first 2-3 actually) you should not worry about that. You should worry about getting everything organized and ready to go, because I guarantee that everything will not go the way you want it to. Only after your first few shows should you start promoting, and you should only do that if at your first shows the crowd got into it and such, cuz you don't want to waste your money on posters, etc. If the crowd wasn't amazed at your first shows, delay your next gig and work on your lineup, stage appearence, livelihood, etc.

Thats just my two cents, anyway.
Do NOT look behind you.

That doesnt mean that u go up on stage, stand still play and get off. Move around a bit. Dont put on a stage act but have stage presence.

When u ask how to draw in as big an audience as possible what do you mean? as in how do you promote the gig as best you can? What kind of gig is it? If its open to all then u can start by posting the details in the UG gigs calendar.

Also if its your first gig, try and play a relatively well known song to catch everyones attention and remember you

Also, for that opening tune, play something well-known, but not overplayed by everyone else in the local music scene. In my area, for instance, there are a lot of GnR fans, so almost every band plays Sweet Child O' Mine. We play Welcome to the Jungle, simply because most of the other bands don't.

Something to keep in mind, y'know.

For your first shows, you need to bring your fans yourself (in the literal sense). Get a couple car pools together and make sure everyone you know goes to the show.

Well, actually. It depends on what kind of crowd of course, but being extreme always help.

I remember my first gig with an older band (I was a little experienced already from a former band), nobody had heard of us. Well, i'm a guitarist.. And i actually cut my arm open, and put my blood, and maggots in my mouth, then when it got disgusting enough after some time on stage, i spat it out.. or well "puked" it out, thats what it was supposed to look like..

I have to tell you. Puking up maggots makes people love you! (Mind you, i play black metal), but be sure not to.. you know, do something that steals the whole picture for a long time. Just a little something, or more things, that go along with a particulear song, the concept of your band, or other things from that drawer.

you can do kind of a themed show. I've done it before last summer, tell everyone to where bathing suites and stuff like that water balloons fights and stuff, you can have some fun with a summer themed show. This will only work though if its like a house party or something similar. If its at a bar or something like that please forget what i just told you.
