The Yamaha Pacifica is very popular. It's really versatile.

Check the stickies at the top of the forum too, It lists the good ones

Personally, I have an Epiphone Les Paul Studio. It is my first guitar, and I got it for 300$. I know the price is pretty high, but it is great for classic rock and punk. I know that Ibanez are good for metal.
Gear:
Epiphone Les Paul Studio Custom (Alpine White)
Roland Microcube

Hoping to get a Strat or Tele next.

+1. I have a buddy that only plays pacificas. You can get a used one for about $100 or a new one for about $200

epiphone special 2, good starter guitar, just as long as you don't like metal
