Well i finally got my traynor ycs50.
loving the cleans. fenderish and great.
distortion not so much.
i feel as though it doesnt have enough gain, so i was wondering
should i boost it with an overdrive or boost pedal?
i'd like to know the differences in the two if i could too.
or should i jsut buy a distortion pedal to use on the clean channel?
help!
the tones i'm trying to achieve are like metallica master of puppets sound.
thanks

An overdrive can function as a boost if you don't dial in any gain, so I recommend one of those. And get something better than a Bad Monkey if you can.

yeah budget is around 130.
i dont get exactly how an overdrive works as a boost
anyone want to explain?

Well I don't know how it physically works, but if you turn the level all the way up and keep the gain at zero it's a boost.

A Boost is meant to gain up your sound without colouring it, whereas an overdrive will bring its on sound and tone to your rig.
#6
so if i'm getting an overdrive, it should be a good one or it'll be just like getting a boost?
#9
so you want to tighten up your sound and add gain?

i'd probably get an overdrive for that (maybe even a lower gain distortion pedal), as a clean boost probably won't act as enough of a boost for the tones you're after (based on how you've described what you want).

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Yeah, those are good. With your budget, I'd recommend trying out the TS-808 reissue as well.
PRS SE Singlecut
Bogner Alchemist 112 Combo
Dunlop Classic Crybaby
Martin OM-1 and Backpacker Steel String

+1. But bad monkey is good also. Cheap and you can use the extra money for something else.

OD for flexibility. Boost for just that extra umph. Won't a boost also increase volume though? So a compressor in the fx loop would keep that down? An idea I just had.

so Guitar-effects-boost-amp-|fx send|-compressor-|fx return|-amp

Seems like it would do the job like that. But that is a pretty odd setup, or is it?
I got some good guitars, yo.

if he wants to use it as a boost why on earth would he want to use a compressor to cancel it out?

07 Fender American Deluxe Strat
07 Fender Custom Telecaster
09 Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster
09 Fulltone OCD V.4
10 Ibanez WH-10 V.2
09 Splawn SuperStock
10 Jet City JCA-20
97 Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

Yeh the SICK! bit sounds a bit stupid.

Well he stated he was just more gain. I'm guessing he does both rock and metal, and if it doesn't push enough for metal, wouldn't he in turn want to keep the same volume without adjusting knobs and just get that extra umph without the volume without the coloration of his tone?

His idea, as I understood it:

buy OD or boost for extra gain[for me that sounds like rock to metal]

OD as stated by someone colors the tone, whereas a boost wouldn't. Just turn the boost up and the compressor will keep the volume the same. If I was just looking for a boost to give me metal, I would have a compressor so as to spare the volume levels and knob adjustments.

so does a ts9 sound ok?

yeah, probably. try the maxon version too, might be a bit cheaper and at least as nice if not nicer (maxon made the older ibanez ones).
