My dad wants to start playing electric instead of acoustic. He listens to a lot of stuff like Iron Maiden, Journey, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and some softer acoustic stuff. He doesn't really make a lot, so preferably a rig which totals under 700-800 USD would be preferable.

I'm thinking a Fender standard strat, or a cheaper les paul, and then a Blackheart combo, and maybe an OD pedal for the heavier stuff. What do you guys suggest?

Also, is it cheaper to buy a strat, or to assemble it from parts, i.e. Warmoth?

Agile AL-3000 (from www.rondomusic.com), the Blackheart, and Danelectric Wasabi OD. It'll all probably run him about $600 too and it's all pretty pretty good

you can buy a great sounding MIM strat for about $400, or spend a little more and get a extremely small increase in quality and get a Warmoth, of course without a great warranty and a horrible resale value.

Heh, I'm actually looking at that exactly. Although, I'm not one for digital effects.. Are there any tube ODs that aren't too expensive?

The bad monkey is built with analog/ss components, not digital IC's.

Is there a method for cleaning up the tone of the Blackheart for softer, smoother kinds of leads?

For $800 in total, he might be able to afford JUST the amp... Also the Blackheart will be great for thsoe tones!
