I'm building a fretless bass and just am curious which gives me what kind of sound. So how does maple sound and how does rosewood sound?

Search bar

maple = brighter

rosewood = warmer

That said I dont belive fretboard wood makes that much of a difference.

I think it's more a matter of comfort, personally I never liked maple fretboards cause they tend to be varnished, and the varnish feels sticky when warm; rosewood and ebony remain smooth throughout the whole session. Just my impressions, feel free to disagree.

+1.
Unless you have a really good ear, it doesn't matter too much, so just go with what feels nicer.

Well while not strictly bass, i saw a strat comparison between two near identical strats, one with rosewood, one with maple and i could certainly tell a difference. The rosewood almsot sounded as if the tone knob was rolled back slightly so slightly warmer.

Surely for fretless you have to plaster the fretboard with strong finish anyway to prevent it rubbing away?

Therefore it hardly matters
