I wasn't sure where to post this, so if it's in the wrong forum, please.

Anyways, I'm trying to write folk music, but I'm not really sure how to get the right sound. I have some songs but I'm not so sure about them. I guess my question is, what makes folk music folk music? Thanks for the help.

folk music can be a lot of different things, if you're talking about American/British folk music, it's usually modal, and tends to use fingerpicking a lot. Also ballads are really common in folk (and by ballads I'm using the traditional definition of ballad, which is a song that tells a story in a narrative format)

Narrative, usually fingerpicking/with chords/mix, strong simple melody with harmonies.
