Ignorance is bliss.

It's used to describe teens by adults (as I've seen my uncle do), and is widely overused in my opinion. It belittles the person in question, which is not what it's meant to do.

The internet is an awesome database of knowledge. Everything you read is tainted with the biased opinions of someone else, which influences you, whether you accept it or not. However, the internet is still an amazingly vast source for education. If you want to look up a math problem, do it and it can help you.

Unfortunately, the internet also provides us with many inconveniences. For example, pornography. Many parents struggle to keep their children from viewing adult websites. As much as many of you would love to have the topic of what I'm bring up to be pornography, it's not.

Along side pornography, there are many, far worse, images and videos on the net that I'm sure many parents don't even know about, that this generation has seen. The images and videos that I'm talking about are all along the lines of animal cruelty, gore, necrophilia, rape, murder etc. There's no denying the existence of this on the internet. A simple Google search and you have "88,300,000 for gore [definition]. (0.07 seconds)" results. Now, despite the fact that the first result is the Wikipedia article on Al Gore, the internet is plagued with gore.

I have seen many of these images, just like many of you reading this. I'm sure you all feel a bit more intelligent when you know exactly what goes on behind the doors of a slaughterhouse, and have seen exactly what happens in many parts of Asia to cats and dogs, or more accurately, their fur. I have been permanently mentally scarred by all of this, but not in a bad way. It has certainly changed my views on mankind as a whole, and have for a while been seeing the world through the eyes of a solipsist. What I have seen can not be forgotten, unfortunately.

If I had the choice I would, without a doubt, forget every single image I've seen that's related to the aforementioned. I would love to be 'innocent' again, where the world is a perfect place, but that will never happen and I've already accepted it. I strongly believe in "ignorance is bliss", and that if I was ignorant to all of the shit in the world, that I would be a lot happier and an all around better person.

Now I ask you the question, would you forget all of the crap you've seen, whether it be on the internet or in person. Would you erase the memories that haven't been most enjoyable, and live life to the happiest?

i would definetly not. living a naive life where others know of the things i so superficially dismiss would not be my ideal world. plus seeing these things lowers the shock level (to a certain dergee) when such things appear in real life.

No. There's **** in the world, and unless I plan on living my life in a big white tower with spires and fancy flags, where everything eats lollipops and cake all day, I need to realize that.

Kinda like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Everyone loses their innocence, so we have to learn to resist these images and not let them rule our lives.
#6
I've seen a lot of gore, all of the "shock" sites, real CP and rape, animal brutality etc etc etc. I don't think seeing any of this has made me a better or worse person. I supposed I'm not really the type to be affected by stuff like that though.

Kinda like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.

That's the first thing that came to my mind when I read the title too.

No way I would forget what I have seen, given the chance. The internet has shown me some crazy things but I think that has generally made me a better person (and one numb to gory/horrific images/videos). Being naive and innocent is nice and all but I think that being aware and scarred is a lot better if you want to get through life.

Yeah I would not forget it all. If anything it helps me. Like when you watch a video about drunk driving in school or something and they show you all the stuff that happens, it lets me know the consequences and I'll have a good idea of what to expect. Then again, being someone who uses the internet almost everyday I've seen most of those images or videos and I must say they are pretty haunting. I forget about them for awhile and then they come back and I've told myself lots of times that I would never see them again but they're everywhere. Idk. I've reached an impasse. I'll be thinking about this one tonight.

i wouldnt forget, you cant live your life not knowing some stuff

like you know from someone else saying or you heard it in the news that somethings happen, but the actual sight of it makes it real

i think that the human beign can be the most friggin disgusting piece of ****, so ****ing sick that most "innocent" people wouldnt believe ever.....and i also think that the absolute oposite of that is true

i got tired of my signature and i no longer has one

Personally, I'd like to forget SOME of the images that have bothered me. (mostly frightful images from when I was younger and more susceptible).

But sadly I have a very good memory.

No. You can't experience true happiness without some sadness to let you know what it REALLY feels like.

Nice thread, although i wouldn't give it all away.
Ignorance may very well be bliss, although arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand.
#14
I imagine what it must be like to be 8 years old again and have no worries or problems about our world, but than again, forgetting everything and refusing to believe that the world has some serious issues isn't going to solve anything. I'd rather know everything I do and try to make the world a better place to live in, despite how futile it might seem.

How do you think the lollipops and cakes feel though? When did you stop to consider their feelings?
#16
I'd keep it all. Ignorance is bliss, but a greater bliss can be achieved through a wide base of experience.

no, because then we'd all be like spoiled people and not have any experience to deal with ourselves, by ourselves.

also, there would be no metal otherwise.. which is bad..

you are probably the most intelligent person on this website, thanks for making this thread.
anyone who knows me personally knows that I have a deep affection for cats, their fluffiness, their love, and yes their tendency to annoy the hell out of you.
just today I saw a cat in the street laying down, my mind goes "what a cute little cat!" I get up to it to find it lying dead with it's eye gouged out. I picked it up laid it in the grass in the alleyway, stroked it twice and left.

I've seen 4chan, I've seen bestiality.
I've seen my friend cry because her mom wasn't coming home. her dad broken-hearted. she hasn't been the same since... it kills me when I see her.

the world is full of evil. Stupid, ignorant people who think that bringing the troops home can end the war, or that the president is an idiot because he himself is scared for his family, his friends and his country. they've turned me bitter and hateful. I don't have a girlfriend, I probably won't have one. I would give anything to have somebody to hug when I'm down, or just to sit with during a movie. but I don't have those things.

everyone in the world has something that no one else does. A gift that God gave to them for a reason. Mine are my guitar playing skills, my love for music.

Never ever take those things for granted. they'll be gone before you know it.

I'd rather selectively get rid of certain memories. Some of the gore, especially with people involved, makes me sick. The actions of alot of people, who think that their religion is right and all the rest others, that they should and can do what they want when they want regardless of the consequences to others, it makes me so god damn angry.
People who try to blame the government for every tiny little thing that's wrong, while they go ahead and exploit every little thing they can in the process so they can make a buck out of it.
But, there are so many thing I have learned that I would never, ever want to forget that I think has made me a better person.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put it, along with your other advice, into a book, the pages of which I will then use to wipe my ass.

Like a few others have said - ingorance is bliss, but knowledge is power.

I wouldn't want to forget any of the 'bad' things I have seen or experienced, because I realise they are all a part of life and who I am today.
I think to float through life trying to ignore everthing bad that happens would be a pretty sad way to live.
People needs things like this to realise their own mortality and to develop a sense of compassion and caring.

It's at times like these when I think of this quote supposedly from Socrates:

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."

No. Seeing that stuff makes me want to make the world a better place.

Thanks to that video about the Chinese men skinning raccoons and dogs, I oppose the fur industry for example. Without nasty stuff, I'd probably be just another one not giving a crap about what happens in the world.

The Scrubs episode My Night To Remember (season 6) is based around this idea. if you guys are interested you should definitely check it out.

i wouldn't want to forget anything i've experienced. however, i do often get depressed thinking about the direction my life has taken. i've done a lot of "dumb" things that can weigh pretty heavily on my conscience. drugs, parties, lying to family/friends, etc.

My mind is going. I can feel it.

Ignorance is NOT bliss, IMO.

Ignorance is ignorant.

The truth may be scary. It may be unsettling. But, in the end, it's the truth. There's nothing you can do to change it. There's nothing you can do to make it better. It is what it is.

I live a perfectly happy life, while still being a strong advocate of truth. I may be a bit more pessimistic than some, on some issues and such, but I'm still a perfectly optimistic person, as well.

Truth is knowledge.

I would like to forget all the porn, honestly. Do you remember, when you saw you first gf naked? I imagine, it would have been a lot more beautiful if I hadn't seen hundreds of naked girls on the internet before.

I wouldn't want to forget anything else though.
