When I fingerpick I do it in a rather unusual manner. I use 3 fingers, but use my index alone and 2nd and 3rd basically together. I'm wondering if this is bad technique or is uneven and sound changing.

and, if so what could I do to work on just using my 2 fingers?

i don't see a problem with it... try playing triplets using ring-middle-index. that will get you some independance. at least it did for me...

I find that that screws up my independance, I'm faster at playing with two fingers than I am with three, unless triplets are involved. I really want to figure out how to get the three working together in a way that doesn't sound like triplets!

do 3213 2132 1321
1 for the index
2 for the middle
3 for the ring
just do these in order slowly at first and then speed it up.

why not just tuck your pinky and ring finger up into a fist sorta thing so that the only two fingers that can move are you index and middle so you'll have no choice but to use jsut those two??

i believe thats because you need to build up strength for your ring finger. right now im currently working on my 3 finger technique and i can go faster with 2 fingers for now but when i master the tech ill be playing steve digiorgio fast. and i thought harris had a three finger technique? any ways triplets are actually kinda easy with 2 fingers but then again its easy on 3 too w/e

For reference, 3 fingers is like da-da-DA, while 2 fingers is DA-da-DA. See my point?

EXACTLY!!!

haha wasnt saying he needs to - he asked on how to develop his two finger technique so i thought that'd be an interesting way to deter him from using a third finger.

I love 3 finger galloping!
My favorite technique besides slapping.
TS try and seperate your fingers more while playing. Its not weird, you can do lots with it imo.

Also, quick question to poeple. I didnt want to amke a thread just for this.
Is using all 4 fingers while playing good for my overall technique? How versatile is it really?

Ow I read it like you were using the technique of the maiden
John myung also uses three fingers. Maybe check him out: he doesn't use gallops most of the time so that is another side to the three finger playing or whatever...

I'm bored

It actually places you at a slight disadvantage because your pinky is so much shorter and there's no real way to position your hand to make it faster. Also, there's got to be that breaking point where the limit of how fast your individual finger can go. I doubt that the fourth finger would do much good because think how long your first finger is just sitting there unmoving. It could have gone again long ago.

two fingers are fast and versatile enough for me. lol the length of my fingers are too different to do multiple plucking XD.
#22
Yeah I reckon 3 is enough for me.
I can pluck pretty fast
In various combos of finger order
