hey im fairly new to bass so i have been trying to learn a bunch of scales. my only question comes in reading scales like the ones found here: http://www.angelfire.com/id/bass/major.html . i understand how to read these, but i just dont know where to do these scales on the neck. are these able to be played in any position on the neck or what? thanks for the help

The bottom line is the E string. The dots make up the scale shape. Say the left most dot on the E string line is the 5th fret, you play the shape in relation to the 5th fret. That left most dot is the ROOT of the scale. So if you played the Mixolydian shape starting at the 5th fret, that is the A Mixolydian.

THe positions seem to be messed up too, unless I'm reading wrong. I don't imagine anyone would play the first three notes of A major 5-7-9 on the E string. They would play it 5-7 on the E and then 4 on the A string. Just be warned, those are the notes of the scale, not necessarily the common used patterns.
