Thats kind of how I do it too.

I do

E
A E
D A E
G D A E
B G D A E
e B G D A E

Stretch the strings and retune. Then do a check, tune anything else, lock down the nut and fine tune.

Some people tune a little higher to compensate for the tension change but I always liked my way. It may take a few minutes more but my Jackson stays in tune for a long long time.
