I've heard some people say that extended computer use will eventually cause eye damage. Does anyone know of any studies that prove this? The reason I ask is because there are tons of people now-a-days that say "such and such is unhealthy for you", when in reality there is no factual evidence to suggest that. I have heard of "eye strain" from extended computer use, but isn't permanent.

This also brings up an interesting question. A lot of jobs today have people working almost exclusively on computers. If this is true, are we going to have a generation of people with blindness on our hands?

Any thoughts?

No, that's a very old wives tale. Masturbation has no negative side effects.
#14
Yeah, it's been around for a while. I think it's just from staring at a bright, colourful light source for extended amounts of time that hurts your eyes, which makes sense.

Aparently, today's LCD monitors are less (if at all) damaging to eyes compared to old CRT monitors.

So you're safer than you would have been 10 years ago.

I spend a lot of time on the computer, and i'm near sighted, don't know if that's directly associated with my computer use, but I would think focusing on something close for a long period would cause some vision loss.
#16
As long as you take regular breaks there shouldn't be any damage, it's when people stare for hours on end with no breaks at all that there is a risk. You can also get special screens that go over the monitor to reduce eye strain and thereby reduce the risk of damage.

no it does not, ive searched 1000 wikipedia pages looking for it the only thing i could find is that the eye gets "used" to computer like lighting and it could be unconfortable and "itchy" when in sunny areas

the same thing happens when someone spends as much time in bright areas, when they come to computer they feel the same...it is not a permanent condition and almost everyone on earth has it

Well, if you sit close to a screen and don't look anywhere else, your optical muscles are going to start "remembering" that focus. So after some time, you will become nearsighted.

me too actually. I have contacts, and like every check up (i have one once a year) the prescription of one of my eyes has to be strengthened a bit

i doubt there's any strong correlation there. i have a bad eyesight and have had a new prescription just about every year, which my eye doctor attributes to growing up. until you are fully done puberty, your eye sight will most likely decrease, regardless of time spent on the internet.

My eyes are terrible because of my extended computer use a few years ago. That, and my eyes were still developing (and still are). I know some people who use computers way more than I do but have vision three times better than me. I guess it depends on your genes too.

yeah that's a good point. apparently one's eyes keep growing up until his early to mid 20's.

Yea in the age of crt monitors but those are all but gone. Its because those old monitors flickered (if you ever filmed your tv or computer monitor with a handheld camera you know what i mean), this would not let your eyes adjust properly to the monitor and it strained your retinas (made them contract and expand very rapidly for long periods of time) and damaged your eye sight.

I aint no doctor but i think thats how it works.

That would've been nice to know in the 4th grade. Now I wear glasses...
#35
Yes, I mean think about it. You're basically staring at a light for hours on end. If you have an LCD or plasma monitor it will be better than a CRT but you're still in essence looking at a light. I actually have a hard time reading stuff on the monitor which I find odd because I can read small fonts fine on paper and i can see far away objects just fine.
#36
It's bad for your eyes in extended use. The problem is not that it's bright or whatever, it's that your eyes stare at a spot for 1-10 hours at a time. Normally they need to move around and whatnot.

Honestly, it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Don't stress it.
#37
I reckon it's true. My eyes feel crap now, I've been on my laptop for hours today. Major excessive use can lead to death too sometimes.

I wonder if it's possible to reverse that. If I stop using the computer for a long long time, not watch tv for a long long time and spend an hour every day looking at a poster from far away....will my vision get better? hm.
