I think everyone missed the maximum budget of £500/$1000 part...

Any I think my current rig comes out to be roughly $1000 and I can't imagine it being any better for the price...

Yes, maximum of £500/$1000 for the cheap rig. Unlimited for the ideal rig.

Mine can be found for under $1000 and would be a great little set up.

BIG +1 there.

Ideal? 1960's pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster, either a 100-watt Plexi or an old AC30, a Fuzz Face, vintage Vox wah, and a Dallas Rangemaster.

Cheap? Mexican Strat, Peavey Delta Blues, homemade Fuzz Face/Rangemaster pedal, and a modded Vox wah from 2006. Woo.
I'd keep it kind of simple, I guess...

Peavey EVH Wolfgang
Peavey HP Signature EXP (I still like it, but I'd give it new pickups)
12-string acoustic, don't know of any specific brands, just something nice
6-string acoustic, don't know brand
Fender Stratocaster (I would have several, ideally, for different things and because I love the single-coil tone)

EVH 5150 III
Blues Junior- don't want to get rid of it, would be good for practice and stuff

I'd keep the ME-50
MXR Phase 90
Some sort of reverb unit, delay unit, I don't know. I wouldn't go crazy with a pedalboard. Throw in a flanger, wah, compressor, octaver, tremolo and chorus and I'd probably be good.

My Cheap rig:

I don't know if my current rig would fit the bill...

Peavey HP Signature EXP
Boss ME-50
Fender Blues Junior

I'd be over by $70, but it would have been more if I would have gotten the Fender new. So, maybe swap the Peavey for a Standard Strat.
Peavey HP Signature EXP (SH4 JB/ SH2 Jazz)
Jackson DK2M
Fender MIM Stratocaster HSS
Fender MiM Telecaster

EVH 5150 III w/ EVH 2x12 cab
Peavey Vypyr Tube 60
Fender Blues Jr.

Boss ME-50; NS-2; RV-5; BF-3
MXR M101 Phase 90

Hmmm lets see

ESP Custom Horizon with a one piece quilted maple top in blue with EMGs and gold hardware
2 Dual Rectifiers and 4 Recifier cabs and 5 more unloaded cabs to make a 3x3 wall of death
A full pedal board including an original Maxon 808
A rack eq and maybe a rack power amp

I think I'd be set after that
This'll be fun

The expensive stuff:

Gibson ES-335
Some kind of Les Paul with Frank Zappa's famous SG electronics in it
A Custom Shop Fender Strat
A "butterscotch blonde" Telecaster
A Zemaitis

Harry Joyce Custom 50 w/Harry Joyce 4x12
Roccaforte Custom 30 w/Roccaforte 4x12
A Leslie rotating speaker

Analogman BC108 Sunface
Analogman Beano Boost (I don't think he offers a BC108 Sunlion)
Electro-Harmonix Ram's Head Big Muff
RMC Teese Pic Wah
An original MXR Script Phase 90 or '74 Script Reissue
Fulltone Tube Tape Echo
An original Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress or a current Mistress modded to original specs by Howard Davis
All of the above professionally wired and mounted to a nice board with a good set of cables

The cheap rig:

Fender MIM Strat
Peavey Classic 30 (used)
Monsterpiece NPN silicon fuzz
MXR Carbon Copy
Fulltone OCD (used)
How to achieve Frank Zappa's guitar tone:
Quote by Thefallofman
Step 1: Buy a Gibson SG
Step 2: Insert Green Ringer, EQ, 3 dead squirrels and a microwave into said SG
Step 3: Plug in and freak the **** out.
Ideal setup:

Custom-made Les Paul with a Floyd, HSH DiMarzios, 24 fret ebony neck, killswitch, 5-way switch, Fender MIA HSS Stratocaster, and a reverse Ibanez Iceman with P-90s.

Mesa Boogie Mark IV, Marshall 1960A Cab, Marshall 1960B Cab and a Fender Twin.

Digitech Whammy IV, Boss DD-7, Boss CH-1, Boss NS-2, Boss BF-3, Dunlop 535Q Wah and Ebow.

Cheap Setup:

Epiphone 1966 G-400 reissue ($400) , a used 5150 combo ($500-ish) and a Digitech Bad Monkey ($50)

I think even my ideal setup is pretty frugal compared to some guys here.

Damn, I keep coming back to edit this post 'cause I keep thinking of stuff for my ideal setup. Eventually you might have to disregard my above sentence about "frugality"...

Just a thread to make me realize how poor I am. But it looks fun...
'57/'58 Fender Stratocaster reissue
'61 Gibson SG reissue w/Bigsby
'52 Fender Telecaster

Reeves Custom 50 w/cab
Vox AC30
'59 Fender Bassman reissue
Leslie Speaker

Silicon (BC109) Fuzz Face
a Vox Wah- maybe something higher end, or maybe just something cheaper to mod the hell out of.
Digitech Bad Monkey (yeah, I'd keep mine... it's never let me down)
Pete Cornish P-1/maybe I'd keep my own green Sovtek Muff
MJM Sixties Vibe/some other Univibe clone
EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress (modded to original specs)
'74 Phase 90 (maybe)
MXR Carbon Copy

All with Evidence Audio cables, and a Strobotuner would be cool too.
Hey, I'm Mike.
Current guitar.. MIM strat, MIA 54' hotrod soft V neck, upgraded pickups (Dimarzio HS3, Fender noiseless, Dimarzio Tonezone hb),

Plus a new body (2 tone sunburst) and a new bridge (Fishman piezo vintage)

Laney L5T112 Lionheart Combo Amp

Let me tell you about heartache and the loss of god
Wandering, wandering in hopeless night
Out here in the perimeter there are no stars

Out here we is stoned
ideal would probably be something like a fender twin, with insanely great cleans, a old marshall plexi or jtm for bluesy od and than a mesa or peavey mark IV or 5150 or something along those lines for metal, with basically my pedalboard with a isp decimator, ernie ball jr. volume pedal, a big muff, and the wah modded
but the cheap rig would still be the exact same board, with my guitars, and a jcm 900 50 watt head through a 1960, if that runs under 1000 bucks, doubt it lol
Quote by progbass
right Metallica is a given. Personally I like to pretend the bus exploded and killed them all in '86.

60s something Jazzmaster (also rosewood)
PRS Custom 22

Old twin reverb

Fulltone Cylde Deluxe
Graphic Fuzz
modded TS808
Line 6 FM4
MXR Carbon Copy
Moog Ring Mod, MURF, aw hell, all of them
Electric Mistress
MXR Micro Amp
I can think of more with time.

And that's just the guitar rig. I'm a multi-instrumentalist
