OK, this could get long...

So, relatively close to where I live there's this huge uproar about a convicted sex offender living in a certain area.

He's served his term twice, as he re-offended 8 months after he first got out of jail. But now he's out again, and as such the police have no reasonable right to keep him in jail. So as always the next step is societal integration (parole monitoring etc.) the commissioner has essentially got this guy living on a 10 acre block of land out in the middle of ****ing nowhere under 24hr police watch. He's not aloud near schools and the like for obvious reasons, he can however do the standard stuff like shopping and just hanging out wherever he wants, under police escort of course.

So to me, it seems that there's no real risk he'll offend again under these conditions. The locals however are freaking out about it claiming their children are at risk and all that. And of course they're pulling the usual taxpayer argument. "Why should we pay for him to live?" seeings as taxes pay the police salary in the big picture. Where the cost actually works out more or less the same whether he's in jail or in this house. Seeing as he can't legally be kept in jail the current set up seems to be the next best thing, noting that this is the last out of the way suburb that he can be kept in that he hasn't already been protested out of.

Personally I think where he's at now is the best place for him, under secure conditions in the public eye.

tl;dr - What is your opinion Pit? Is it right to have a convicted repeat pedophile living in a relatively well populated suburb? Or should the police commissioner amend the state policies to keep this man on prison ground for the rest of his life?

While he is a possible threat to children, he's done his time in jail, and the people have to give him credit for that. It's not fair to mis-treat somebody because of their past mistakes. My personal view is that he should be just as free to do as he please as everyone else. Everyone has the capacity to do evil, and we have no right to judge him.

If he's in a suburb, in those conditions. With the strict watch and all... He pretty much is in jail. He can't even go to the store without being escorted. He paid his "debt" by serving his time. And besides... you can't rape the willing.

You have a logical explanation, yet I'd still buy pepper spray... just in case

It's not rape if you yell 'Surprise!'

but seriously.. it wouldn't make me too uneasy, however I'm living on a street with a house for drug user's/women who are abused by their husbands.... so I'm kind of surrounded by weird things and it doesn't really freak me out much. Plus I'm not a little kid so it's all good in the hood.

They have...10 acres actually...at least 10km's out from any schools or whatever...

10km's is a long way when you don't have a car.

actually... i kinda envy him... i mean raping little boys isnt all that high up on my list... its like 7 or something... but man rent free life just for play Diddles the Clown... sounds like he got off easy... but seriously i dont really see anything wrong with him being out of prison. Give the guy a break, he probably received enough penis in jail to last him a life time anyway.

He really should be in prison, but since he is out now living in the middle of nowhere under police supervision I he should be left alone. I don't think he will strike again, seeing as though he'd be surely put away for life if he did.

He couldn't do much harm where he is now. I saw the place on the news as it is pretty close to my area. But if i were him I'd try to move somewhere far, far away.

I'll say what I've been saying from the start of all this ****, make a nice little community in the center of the desert, with food coming in once a month and a 12 m fence around it, a couple of shops, and a couple of houses, then stuff all the sex-predators into it, than hide, and if you "forget" to send them food for a year or so, its the crows problem.

Well, the fact that he re-offended after he was let out the first time gives them good reason to be suspicious, but he has served his time and is slowly being rehabilitated into society, so he should be given the same opportunities and life as everyone else.

That said, I'd be careful about any offers of free candy.

(rebuttal)Well, a cop is in the area (this is from last nights debate) and she has two kids (2 & 4) and she has gone against her commanding officer, by signing a petition voting to get him kicked out. When a copper is worried, damn you should be too. After having that on your record, there is NO way you could become a functioning member of the society, EVER.

e.g.
"oh I'm from *******"
"Wasn't that where that Ped/fights/something bad lives?"
"Yeah..."
"Um... I've got to go now..."

That is a conversation you'd get from any normal, functioning member of the society, for the Pure reason that when they associate you with that particular suburb. Also, house prices, as soon as a scar is placed on a neighbourhood/suburb, it is irremovable. House prices in that general area will drop significantly, people will become in debt as they wish to move, but can't because no one wants to buy in that area. Schools in that area will lose placements because parents are frantic to get their child away from the "monster".

/end-speech

Lucky thing is after his hearing, he will be moved/put back in jail.
