i'm fascinated with semi hollows

i've been looking at the epiphone dot and the sheraton

now, there's the epiphone dot and the epiphone dot studio...what's the difference?

and the sheraton and the sheraton 2...what's the difference?

and which is a better guitar?

oh and i play prog/alt/metal...so are those guitars too jazy?

EDIT:

i've been browsing the epiphone website and i saw the Casino and the Nick Valensi Rivera P94

so if you guys know anything about those...please share

normally when it says studio, it just means that they take some unimportant stuff off(binding), to make it lighter.

the sheraton II is the updated version of the original sheraton. In terms of differences, it just has a stopbar tailpiece as opposed to that... "frequensator"? tailpiece, and full sized humbuckers. The rest is just cosmetic as far as i know. But the original sheraton is very very old and hasn't been produced, as far as i know, since the sheraton II was introduced.

And as slashrock94 said, the dot studio is basically a watered down dot, with no binding, no glossy finish, master vol/tone controls, and open-coil humbuckers, its been stripped of the un-necessary features of the regular dot, to cut the cost.

I personally prefer the sheraton although they are both very similar guitars. But i'm comparing a 1998 samick-made sheraton II to a newer dot. so i can't really tell you which is better, i guess its a matter of trying them both and see which you prefer. the sheraton looks much nicer though

Check the specs on the epiphone site... they are pretty similar...

edit: and these guitars should be good for prog and alternative rock, but even though the guitar will sound awesome for metal, you'll get an unusable amount of feedback from it at that level of gain.
Rig Winter 2017:

Fender Jazzmaster/Yamaha SG1000
Boss TU-3, DS-2, CS-3, EHX small stone, Danelectro delay
Laney VC30-112 with G12H30 speaker, or Session Rockette 30 for smaller gigs
Elixir Nanoweb 11-49 strings, Dunlop Jazz III XL picks
Shure SM57 mic in front of the amp

Seriously!

I was playing a Gretsch hollow body my dad acquired and messing around with the gain... Best high gain tone i have ever heard come out of my amp. At least when it wasn't feeding back.

get a casino or a sheraton , the riviera one is really expensive if u got the money get that one, but it doesnt differ much

i own a sheraton and i was once in the same dillema my conclussiones were that the dot is just a cheap CHEAP imitation at least the sheraton and casino are epiphone original and the dot is a really cheap gibson copy...

now ask yourself do uw want to sound like john lennon or john lee hooker?

i found the sheraton to be more versatile casino not to good with p-90 pickups

and u cant go wrong with humbuckers!

i changed mine for some seymur duncans its far superrior than most es225 from gibson now...
all u need are some better pick ups

i don't want to sound like anyone

i think i'm getting the sheraton

and i'm gonna change the pick ups

i'm stuck between some bill lawrence, emg's, or seymour duncans

i have a pair of bill lawrence's already and they sound amazing so i might just switch it from the cheap ass semi hollow i have now and put into the sheraton

oh and i'm gonna tune lower

D standard, so i can then drop it to drop C

maybe even lower

C standard, so then when i drop it, drop B

and this might be due to the fact that i'm a huge QOTSA fan

thanks for all the help guys

Regardless of whether you're only going to play metal, or if you're going to play a variety, with distortion and a loud amp you're going to get terrible feedback. Loud noise from amp, comes into hollow body, and then reflects, is 'picked up' by the pups and then put back through the amp, where it goes to the hollow body, etc. See where we're going? If you play nice cleans you may not get that.

definately sheaton II....dot is a piece of crap and casino is almost the same but with an ugly ass bridge thing...sheraton is one of the nicest guitars for that price range...its a real high quality guitar...assembled somewhere but checked out and set up in the US. my friend has one, really nice, luxurious. the dot is like $300 so it must suck...and the sheraton isnt like the crap epiphones, its good...read some reviews on it...and don't plan on changing it till u have it...thats a dumb idea. you might realize u like the pickups..
