Pit,

my boss was saying earlier that he knows a way to see what people do with their time spent on the computer. (including internet browsing )

He said it (this method he uses) was very time consuming and that he could see each website that had ever been visited even those the history in the browser had been deleted. Those are my only two clues.

I don't browse too much and I don't look at anything like pr0n so I'm not too worried.

I always delete my history.

We are on a small network.

He isn't too computer savvy so probably nothing insane.

HE WAITED TILL THIS EMPLOYEE LEFT AND ACTUALLY PHYSICALLY GOT ON HIS COMPUTER.

So it can't be that hard. Right?
But I still want to be safe.

1. How does he do it?

2. How do I counter it?

3. Is there anyway to view your entire computer's history and what programs were run on specific date?

Maybe he uses that program teachers use in school. It allows them to like turn their screen to yours, so they basicly see everything you do.

Otherwise, I don't know. Temp files?

How to counter it: Don't visit anything "bad" at school. Wait til you're home for porn.

Delete everything, including cookies and the cache? Don't ask me how to go about it, I think you just have to find the right folders...

if your place of work is on a network they probably keep a log of what sites you visit etc

Admins can view anything your doing on thier network basically
#6
index.dat holds information about visited sites. Also he could check the cookies and get the websites. He may also have software similar to a keylogger where he can track what every user on the network is doing. Aside from that, hes prob talking crap just to get u to believe he is watching so you dont browse too much.

hmm...he could be lying

or he could have placed a program on all of the computers in which he sets his computer as the one MASTER computer and all the rest are exactly the same as his. i believe it's called "ghosting" or something like that. if he's done that then he can view what you're doing on your computer exactly when you're doing it, but i don't know about viewing deleted internet history.

my guess is he's lying to keep your ass working

He'll probably use a tool that tracks screen movements, or, most likely, he'll have a program that tracks all the websites visited that use the place's internet. That makes it really hard not to get caught on stuff.

Our old school used the same sort of thing

I'm not sure but rather safe than sorry.
Just delete the history and Temp Files including cookies and cache.
Most blockers/keyloggers wont work if you delete the history and such (cybersitter wont even realize you had been on the internet)
#13
I just checked the cookies and temp files.

cookies only had an index and nothing else.

Temp files had 4 empty folders and an index and nothing else.

WTF

Oh my teacher used to use that all the time to mess with kids by moving their mouse.

Yes, but to look set that up and actually look through the log files is a pain in the ass. He won't have done that.

You can see the last time you ran a program by checking it's properties (or the folder in which the application is in) and checking the "Last Modified Date". This is affected by all users though, so unless you're the only one using that PC, there is no accountablilty.

The thing you'd have to worry about most is a key / system logger. These run invisibly in the background and record everything you do to a remote location (either another PC or on the net). I'd doubt he'd have this either.

Basically, he's ****ting you, but do be careful. Remove your browsing history is a definate, but simply deleting files doesn't mean they're not recoverable.

Recommend that becasue the PC IS running slowly that you defrag the hard drive. This is the best way of erasing deleted files without getting bespoke software to do such a thing.

Thank you. How much of a pain in the ass is it to look through the index.dat files?

Very easy.

Right click on it, Open with > Notepad, et voila. There it is, in all it's bare naked glory.

Just wondering, how do you find the "index.dat", is it just in TEMP files?

+1 on the defragmenter btw.

it will work, but hardly efficiently. if the pc had been defragged a few days before and nothing done but browsing then its unlikely to affect anything

and i'm guessing he has some software running on the pc that logs what goes on, theres nothing that intrusive in windows!

Most people I know seldom defrag. This includes myself. It all depends on the person and how anal they are!

If you didn't go on porn or anything, why are you so worried and making such a big deal?
