A few years ago I had this amazing gig as the guitar consultant building the world's largest playable electric guitar for the Discovery Channel series BIG! Discovery is re-running the series on HD, the guitar episode is on next week July 20 and 21.

It's pretty amazing seeing this thing being built - every part was made just for this guitar. We used the world's largest amp to try it out (a massive Ampeg.) For the conclusion we had a jam session with Peter Frampton!

There's parts of the episode in this video I made for Seymour Duncan who I called up to build the pickup.

Here's the BIG! Episode Schedule

July 20, 10 PM
July 21, 1 AM and 6PM

be cool (if big enough) to get a whole bunch of people to stand on the strings at certain frets, move around...

Here's a link to the article with all the specs

The strings - we used wire of the exact gauge for that size (originally we were talking with a piano string company - production company wanted the material for free - they wanted to charge - so the head builder, this guy they called Gadget, decided on using just basic wire but ordered at the appropriate gauge.

To play it, they had one guy behind fingering the first 3 strings (well actually 2 'cause 2 hands...) and a guy in front fretting, and then Seymour with a massive pick pounding on the strings. Then we tuned it to G (9 octaves lower) and brought out the massive slide.

The guitar actually sounded pretty damn good, just very low (9 octaves low)

Check out the video on youtube.

We should get the worlds fastest runners and have them run up and down the strings.

We will have successfully played a Paul Gilbert song on the worlds largest guitar =P

Yeah the amp was crazy - we didn't have an amp yet, we were thinking of custom building something - then the production crew goes to the Hollywood guitar center to shoot this scene there - and we see this massive ampeg.

there was a concern that when we would play out of it that everyone would crap in their pants - like seriously crap in your pants cause the guitar was 9 octaves lower than standard and this massive amp was going to totally shake our innards. we test it out - the guitar and the amp worked perfect - really freaking loud, really great tone.

no one admitted to crapping in their pants.

I think Mythbusters disproved the "Brown Note" myth in one of the episodes.

Wait, how the hell did you get pieces of wood big enough?

Everyone knows your toan sucks unless the guitar is hand carved, by a nun, from a single piece of ancient Venezuelan oak.
