So my guitarist wrote a song and I'm having trouble coming up with a good bassline. I'm pounding roots in the chorus so I thought I'd do some more melodic show-offish playing in the verse... but I'm stuck. So I thought I'd challenge the UG bass forum community!

The chords are:
C6add4 (quickly to jumps to C6sus4 at the end of the bar)
Cadd4 (jumps to Csus2)
C (jumps to Cadd4)
Cadd2

I realize that they can have alternative names, but I guess it makes the most sense if the whole verse revolves around C. Here's the midi. You can loop it and just jam over it. Record yourself when you've come up with something or just post a tab!

The song itself is a "up-tempo ballad". Keep in mind that there are also vocals and a lead guitar playing a melody, so you can't make it too flashy.

Bass off!

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

Per chord change.

Do I win a prize now?

EDIT: In all seriousness, I looked over the part. First thing that came to mind was creating your own set of notes to hit per chord and then just sliding between those set of notes with a melody. Sounds nice.

This is completely off topic/possible thread hijack...but you really gotta start spelling rhythm right. Thats been driving me insane for the past few days since you started doing that.

but they're rythym points, not rhythym points...

and it is on topic, Lendorav likes t-birds and it will sound good on one...

if he uses it.

and progbass, hold out for money next time.

To be honest, you should be listening to the drums in this, not the guitar part, to write an effective and melodic bassline.

Basically, yes.

C'mon regulars, contribute! I thought this would be kinda fun

Sigh... FINE. I thought this would be cool, seeing how different bassists' minds work... but if no one wishes to play along I guess I'll just play the C note for 16 bars. I kid . But in all seriousness, I really am having trouble coming up with an interesting line, thought I could get some ideas from the forum. Guess I was wrong.

Lendorav--here's an idea. Step away from the bass line for an afternoon. Go for a walk with an mp3 player full of songs, esp stuff you don't listen to too often. Don't think about the bass line--sleep on it all and then go back tomorrow and play a bass line to the progression without thinking about it too much.

I don't know if it will help, but listen to "Lost in the Supermarket" by The Clash. Most of the song is just an E chord with suspensions and additions. Maybe you can get some inspiration from that bassline.
