I have just sent this email to one of the daily mail writers, after me and my friends were extremely shocked by an article of his. I would post the article, but we binned it.

It was about this event, celebrating the history of gypsies, and this awful man decided to be extremely sarcastic in it. He was talking about famous people with traveller ancestors. He changed the lyrics of an Elvis song and put it in his article, and it ended with "I came to live in an illegal field in Cambridgeshire, and I got benefits aswell".

This is what I wrote.

Dear Richard,

I met with a few friends last night, and we went to the local pub. We happened upon a copy of the 'daily mail' that had been left on our table, and decided it could be interesting to read it.

I must say, some of this could be more subtle. An article about babies born in wedlock, that somehow progresses to a point where it needs the subtitle "high levels of immigration". To be honest, I did not see the point of that column- all it did was state statistics, without evaluation or conclusion. But to the point- I read your page. I've forgotten what the main article was about, but I read the bit sandwiched in the middle, about 'gypsies', and I thought that it must be possible to give information about this event without such blatant sarcasm and contempt for travellers. And that song at the end was extremely immature and offensive.

Gypsies are people. People have to be supported. Whether they live in on illegal land, or we give them more money than you think they should get, it is only material. The happiness of those people easily transcends the importance of money or land, and I think it is sad that people choose to believe otherwise. The same applies to the mail's view on immigration. People come to England from other countries because they want a better life- because they want a home, a family, and a job that will make them happy. I will pay as much tax as I need to if it will make these people happier, and it disturbs me that people don't share the same outlook.

Of course- you can believe what you want to be believe. You can hold as many ignorant and immoral beliefs as you want, but it is wrong to share them when you are in a position to offend or upset people. This is why I don't understand why the Daily Mail (although I'm not saying this is the only culprit) is allowed to be published when it can have such a huge influence, and it is sad that people still read it and sincerely absorb what is written.

Yours sincerely,
John.

I know writing this is completely pointless, but I really want to hear what he has to say for himself.

Does anyone else think the daily mail shouldn't be published?

No - I think you should definitely be able to publish pretty much anything. Freedom of the press is important. It's a shame that anyone takes the Mail seriously though.

good job on the letter. my kudos to you

I've never read the Daily Mail but I have read similar articles in numerous papers with similarly selfish outlooks on such subjects.

For example, one story that keeps recurring is that 15% of the world's oil, or coal or something like that (I can't remember) last year was used up by China. Yes, that's a lot, but if you take into account the fact that they have 20% of the world's population, it suddenly ain't that much is it?

The point I'm trying to make is, that people writing in newspapers and magazines really should start looking at all sides of the story, from all angles.

But the press should be completely factual and unbiased. It is there to give information, and this is closer to the definition of propaganda.

+1 just for hating the daily mail

it shouldn't not be published though.

i find your extremely left wing views quite strange. you're obviously extremely liberal, yet you are effectively saying people shouldn't have freedom of speech.

it should still be published because people have different views, and we should tolerate that as a society, but i don't agree with what they have said in the article in question.

Thats just the thing though. They're free to print what they like, but we're not exactly free on the information we're getting from them.

Kudos for writing that letter as well .

I got the Mail on Sunday the other week for a free Bowie CD (I hated myself for it) and decided to make the most out of my money and read the thing... one of the columnists took it upon himself to say he doesn't care about Mugabe, and neither does anyone else in Britain, because it doesn't affect us O_O
I stay away if I can.

The column was 'little john'. The email address had the name richard.littlejohn

I called him Richard, didn't really know what to put though.

What you have to remember is, sadly, this paper is for a niché market that exists in England/UK - it is one of the best selling papers.

Those sort of "songs" are not rare in the paper. I don't know how anyone could find them funny, but clearly people do if they keep printing them. There are only one or two columnists in the whole paper with any integrity, Quentin Letts (SP?) being one - but he could do much, much better than that paper.

What you have to remember is parts of the Daily Mail pander to the ignorance of many people... It's how they earn their living.

Edit - Richard little-facist? He is the biggest **** in the whole paper and clearly a supporter of the BNP or similar parties.

This is true, though is the Daily Mail primarily a viewpoint and opinion paper, or is it your actual newspaper? I wouldn't know myself...American and all that.

In any case, anything with actual opinion or bias apparent in its creation usually goes in an "opinion" section of the paper, so that it isn't taken as fact, as some unscrupulous types might take to digesting it as such.

Otherwise, well written, John.

Sorry to double post but I should have known Littlejohn would have been behind that article, he has done many similar.

His retard/columnist in crime is "Peter Hitchens", and if you have seen him on Question Time, you will see it's not difficult to imagine him as a concentration camp guard.

Not only are his views generally laughable and backed up by absolutely nothing, he actually says he wouldn't vote for anyone, which of course generates applause. Can people be really that retarded? He attacks everything, yet has never once said what he would like put in place... I think I know, personally. Maybe the applauders do as well...

"Extremely left wing and extremely liberal"? I'm sorry I don't know where you are from, but his viewpoints are indeed left, but not "Extreme" left.

If it had to be factual and unbiased it would be infringing on the right of freedom of the press, and freedom of speech. I do agree that the Daily Mail is a pile of arse, but I think it should just be ridiculed into submission, not forced.

I suppose it is a fair point, but I believe in freedom of press, and people being able to publish whatever they want. The press isn't free if they can only publish unbiased facts. Now I'm not saying I suport the Daily Mail, I think it's rubbish, but I find it hypocritical that you say they should tolerate Gypsies and other views, but you won't tolerate their views. They have just as much right to an opinion as you.

I think that the newspapers should report things factually. I can see in the posts above me that some people think that newspapers should have freedom of speech and should be able to say whatever they like. Adding onto this idea, if people want an unbiased newspaper, they will buy the most unbiased one, and eventually, due to the demand for newspapers that are not biased all newspapers will become unbiased.

Unfortunately people want to read a good story, and biased stories are more interesting. And some articles wouldn't be interesting if they weren't. So the newspaper that is a bit biased will be bought the most.

I think newspapers should not be biased, and be completely factual. If newspapers are biased they can cause more fear, hatred and anger. If people want to read something more interesting than whats really happening in the world, they should read a book.

Sadly, no.

Although I will admit to reading the Sunday magazine that comes with it. Just because I like laughing at Piers Morgan's arrogance.

Ironically the Sunday Supplement magazine is much, much better than the paper itself.

No, because that would descend to the kind of bias and restrictions that The Daily Fail actually proposes. Luckily, we have very wide variety of papers in Britain, and I think that none should be eradicated, as there is a huge variety of opinions in them all, from socialist views in The Guardian and The Observer, centre politics in The Times and Independent and FT right wing papers like The Telegraph and The Sun and then stupidly far right papers like The Mail. But, in all fairness, I think Peter Hitchens is hilarious and quite a good journalist, despite the fact he writes for the Mail.

I hope that this journalist does reply to you letter, if he really is as intellectual as he believes then you will get a reply, maybe a good one. But, unfortunately, it's unlikely.

That's odd, usually the Sunday version of any paper is far lower grade than the weekday version. Maybe The Mail has no room to go any lower, so by chance they improve.

Believe it or not, most immigrants pay just as many taxes as you do, have a legitimate job and abide the law. And believe it or not, there are just as many English people living off benefits in England, doing **** all with their lives as there are foreigners, if not more. So quit bitchin'.

Well, my argument to that is in my letter.

Why does money matter so much to you? It's not like you won't be able to survive if you pay a little more tax.
