Just as the title said, i found out today on cnn that teen pregnancy is going up which i find kinda odd at this point as my ex-g/f just had an abortion... the article is http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/07/10/teen.pregnancy/index.html

Anyone have any opinions on why? I doubt teen sex numbers have gone up or done much in a while, I personally blame it on schools teaching only abstinence because face it, everyone wants to get laid all you're doing is making condoms harder to get for them

How is it harder to buy condoms? You don't have to be a specific age to buy them.

Get your gf to go on the pill. Solves lots of problems.

Either that, or buy condoms in massive bulk, and relish in economies of scale!

I don't get why this is a surprise at all. I mean if they have sex more = more pregnancy right? If you don't want to get pregnant don't F%*#( around, because everyone knows if you are going to do it there will always be those times when you will not use protection etc.

why is the finger pointed at the female? i do believe for female to become pregnant one must finda penis that explodes. i always firmly believe these should not be pointed at the female but at the male since it is THEM that produce the seed. The female is just a car, males are the gas.
So instead of the title of this thread being daughters keep you skirts down, it should be sons keep your pants zipped up!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you mean earlier sex education is a bad thing, because I think that kids should be taught to use condoms as early as they can understand sex. I mean, yeah, hold off on teaching kids about sex so they don't experiment or anything when they're 10 or something, but if they do know about sex I think you should teach them about condoms as early as possible. Ok, my post made no sense and it's just a mush of words . Like I don't think I knew about condoms until two years after I learned what sex was.

Both are at equal fault, the male isn't at any more fault nor is the female. They both wanted to have unprotected sex, they both should pay, but usually only the female does.

I don't think that it's a bad thing, but the first time I specifically remember receiving sex education, about condoms and intercourse, was when I was thirteen. In the four years since the media has moved on, and the sexuality we're bombarded with has only increased. Kids are being taught about sex younger and younger, and the more they see it around them and the more they're educated the more they're going to do it. Unfortunately, teenagers are fucking stupid.

That is true, but most kids know about sex by the time they're 11 or 12 and if they know about then I think they should get proper education about it. I mean kids and teenagers are stupid, but if most kids know about it already why not try to teach them about condoms and abstinence as early as you can? Also, they should be taught about STDs and pregnancy and the real risk to having sex.

Education is only part of the solution - it means nothing if kids know about safe sex but still aren't bothering with it. But I really think if kids weren't having sex thrown at them in school at the ages of 13 and 14 they wouldn't be as tempted to try it. They'd all be getting into gangs and shooting each other instead, or something. Contraception isn't available enough for awkward children who think themselves mature enough to fuck, but we're still trying to ram information about it down their throats. It's no good telling them about The Pill when a poor lass has no idea how to get it, or doesn't want her parents knowing.

what i was trying to point out is why does society point the finger and say slut. why isnt it at THEM, mean two the parties involved in the consummation. you dopes, im am not saying it is the males fault, i was mearly trying to make the point that as easy as the finger is pointed at the female, it can go to the male. BUT 100% agree it should be two people, but lets face facts the male can "get out" of a pregnancy situation alot easier then the female. Thus all blame, results, stereotypes and dumped on the female.
One mentioned the show JUNO, do we remember when Juno walks in her school hallways and people are pointing and shaking their heads at her? But when whatever that guys name is walking around, no one disapproves of him?

I wish people would realize if you're not mature enough to buy condoms then you're not mature enough to have sex, but that's not going to happen. The whole trend sucks, but I think kids should know about sex just not in an explicit way.

Now that's out the way. I'd agree mostly. Though there is a very easy way out for the female too. It's called emergency contraception. If a girl was to get pregnant, even if a condom was used, the man cannot take the morning after pill for the girl, nor can he take an abortion for her. Legally he has a requirement to provide for a child after it's born however. Though I'm not sure if a man has custody, if the mother would have to pay child support if the couple was to split.

ya, my main problem with everything is the difficulties in a girl getting on the pill or a guy buying condoms, many people that are mature enough to have sex are to shy and awkward to tell there parents and many parents just refuse, like in my case:

my ex-g/fs parents knew we were having sex and she even asked for them to put her on the pill cause neither of us had the money or the guts to go buy condoms and they told her no and yelled at her about it (although they did nothing about stopping the two of us XD which is what led to this mess after we broke up but thats all taken care of and im no longer going to be a father)

The problem is the disparity between parents thinking teenagers having sex being TOTALLY IMMORAL AND BAD AND EVIL and teenagers thinking sex is WAY FREAKING AWESOME!

Sex just needs to become accepted as a part of life. The less people think about it in terms of OMG SEX and the more they think about in terms of "its fun, but I better be careful" the more better off we'll be.
#33
I'm not an old fuddyduddy, but the way alotta young girls are dressing is sickening.

I have heard of 11 year olds having sex, and that is pretty menacing to me.

If parents get an abortion simply b/c they don't feel like raising a kid, they should be injected with poison, dismembered, and thrown in a trash can, just to see what it feels like.

There are certain circumstances where abortion is somewhat reasonable, but people need to learn, sex isn't just a freakin game.

Yep. Makes me sick honestly. My girl's little little sister who is 12yo has a friend of the same age who had sex with six different guys in ONE week! WTF?

It's just getting ridiculous. I think the parents of these children need to pay a little more attention to them. Jeezus.....

Dude most kids do think, "its fun, but I better be careful." But then the opportunity arises and they go OMG SEX and get pregnant. You're probably going to disagree with me here, along with most of UG, but people under 20-21 (at the youngest) are NOT able to handle that situation well. They aren't able to make real decisions as effectively as they should. THAT'S why we have such high teen pregnancy. Sex/procreation is a bit too big of a responsibility for teenagers to deal with. I think it's quite obvious, really. Unfortunately, being responsible is quite against the current mindset.
We're only strays.

I blame the internet. Kids can get access to unwanted porn if they mistype a url and they learn about things they didn't even want to know about... but they then act on it.
Oh, and when I was 12, kids were doing it all the time (I'm 20). But that was in England...
guys were like, why don't you have a girlfriend. I was like, "why do I need one?"
Their response: "so you can shag her". I was 12 and so were they. Plus, kids used to talk about their sex lives all the time in class at that age.
