This band just blows my mind, Oppressive crusty death/doom at it's absolute pinnacle. No one can match the cold foreboding atmosphere that they produced. And like many other greats they released a small amount of amazing material and then disbanded. never even being realized until afterwards. Anyways I'll post a myspace link and their cool ass music video they released and hopefully some of you will dig it.

Didn't really do anything for me.
But I lol'd at "the cold foreboding atmosphere"
Band called Winter with a "cold foreboding atmosphere".....wow....there's a shock
So yeah, free bump for that.

Hey at least you posted unlike these other bastards.

This band is great, one of the first and best death/doom bands there were
I’m not the man I used to be, I... I can’t go back to Arkham.

I... I should return to Arkham.

i love that it happened right after.

Is it just me or does New York have a thing for making the heaviest death metal possible? Incantation,Mortician,Winter,Suffocation,Morpheus Descends,Immolation ect.I would love to go to a New York Death Fest of some sort.If only Winter were still around, i would kill to see them live somehow.Their style is so distinguished in it's own way, such an incredible dead feeling from every chord they strike. Oppressive is really the best way to describe this.

I, despite not being a fan of said bands, actually find that really interesting. It's kinda cool that all these bands sprung up around similar times, playing such similar styles and it proved so influential. It's kinda cool that certain places get that sorta reputation.
#9
Well to be fair theirs a marginal difference between Mortician and Immolation and lots of the said bands. But it seems that the strong hardcore punk scene in New York somehow influenced a bunch of young metalheads in the early 90's all churn out the most evil and crushing metal at that time.Hell some could argue that Incantations debut is still unmatched in terms of brutality today. It says something allot about the culture of the city it's self imo. Maybe an underlining morbid frustration of big city life with all it's crime and pure population bulk that made these young nihilistic metalheads inspired to make this kind of music. Of course it's all speculation but it's still fun to think about. Makes me wish my city had a string metal scene of some sort though

Well, my area....whatever you wanna call it, is pretty much '-core' land. Which is ok when the odd decent core band shows up, but you get sick of hearing 30 As I Lay Dying clones a week

I do agree that surroundings affect style. I'm sure New York would help project that morbid, doom and gloom persona that so many metal bands took on, just like how the Bay Area thrash scene would have been influenced by the Bay/surf feel. That fast, frantic, energy filled scene.

Another great example would be all those bands like Blasphemy from Victoria B.C. ,Blasphemy claimed that Ross Bay in Victoria WAS the gates of Hell.A member says satanists have known this is the gates of Hell for nearly 200 years. He claimed that goat heads were impaled on the front of the beach. A storm came through and destroyed a cemetary, leaving coffins and bodies floating around, some which had been dead for hundreds of years. There was a hidden grave of a witch who had died around the early 1900's, which had hieroglyphic writing on it. Blasphemy are basically legends in the underground and known by many as the most evil music their is. Ross Bay has also been known for many other sightings of odd occultism type things happening. My facts may by blurred on this matter so if i have it wrong the someone please tell me as I'm very new to Blasphemy,Conquerer,Revenge,Black Witchery and all of that kind of stuff.

It didn't really do that much for me to be honest, although I have never been that much of a Doom Metal fan.

I agree, in part because NYHC was heavier and more industrial-sounding (not industrial the genre, but industrial: clanging, banging, brutal machine noise) than anything else at the time.

This band is definitely a heavy bruting band. But, that Ross Bay story creeped me the hell out. Don't even know why...Just creeped me out.

These guys for sure deserve another listen. Fo sho yo.

Well it's definitely not cold like a a black metal band. More so cold as lifeless and pale through it's droney nature. But a band like Winter is obviously not something everyone will get.Though hell they may even grow on you. When i first heard Winter last November i didn't really get it, only in the last couple of months have a learned to really love this band. To me that is the sign of a great band. Ones who get more and more interesting with every listen but take some time to really get into. Rather then some obnoxious tech death band like Braindrill witch seems awesome at first but gets boring after a few weeks.

I just realized, my Grandfather lives in Victoria B.C. . Maybe i should go visit.........

Lol.
What bullshit.
As a LaVeyan Satanist, I'm genuinely offended by that book.
#22
Well some "satanists" have some pretty stupid and sick ideas. But it does just seem like propaganda to me as well. But it could be that just some whack job cult started throwing the word Satan around. A real Satanist would most likely not be involved in **** like that.

#23
Considering the Satanic bible SPECIFICALLY forbids the actions that take place in that book....

There are specific paragraphs (and in some cases, entire chapters) devoted to explaining that child abuse is out, ritual sacrifice is out, murder or unwarranted physical harm is out, none of that "blood bath" shit is allowed, etc.
#24
They were probably a Christian cult, witch a large majority of those child sacrificing, " lets all drink the poison now" type cults are.

Also

Winter has some amazing solos. No wankery, just awesome oppressive sounds and melodies that fits this music so well and reminds me of Coffins so much.In fact Uchino claimed that Coffins whole death/doom approach begun after he listined to Winter. I need to find "Into Darkness" on vinyl.

Theistic Satanism is the one that does all the "Satan, my master" type stuff, and we (ie: LaVeyan Satanists) don't consider it TRUE Satanism, because it's so twisted on our main principles.
#35
well in a sense that could be true satanism given that its devoted to satan as the name 'satanist' implies
#36
The name was chosen as a shock tactic basically. Even Anton LaVey said that. Basically, because Christ embodies all of the "good" and "virtuous" aspects of life, the ones that prohibit anything fun ( ), Satan would embody all of the "bad" aspects. Sex, gluttony, etc etc.

When in reality, all of the sins boil down to basic human instinct. Technically, wearing clothes, other than to keep warm is pride. So, every single person who has ever worn a shirt because they thought it looked good, is going to hell. Gluttony means you eat too much, which is human instinct, because if we eat too much, then we don't HAVE to eat for a longer period of time. etc etc.

Anyway, I've derailed this thread long enough, so yeah.
Back on topic.

Yeah, but the principles of LaVeyan Satanism are exactly like those of Ayn Rand: pure materialism.

It's given a humanist edge.

No offense, but if you spend some time learning philosophy, you'll never take anything that blatantly one-dimensional as truthful again.

So a little birdy told me that Into Darkness got re released on vinyl. Dose anyone have an info on it? I NEED it for my collection. And i think it would sound so amazing on vinyl.

Theirs a criminally small amount of material from them,an album,an ep and a demo. And i have a live bootleg. Into Darkness is an absolute classic. Most oppressive and and massive riffs ever recorded. The guitar tone is ridiculous.
