Hey people. I have an SG G-400 and I have heard the pick-ups sound strange, as well as have found out from playing it and comparing it to my old Squier.

The pick-ups also give my guitar a weird sound on my Line 6 Spider III, so I want to replace these.

What pickups under $100 are good for an Epiphone SG?

i think it's the spider giving your G-400 a 'wierd' sound...

new pups will make a SUBTLE change in ur sound....i'm certain that if you change ur pups now it'd be like washing a window that only has a few smudges on it.

if you upgrade your amp to something NICER however...it'd be like buying a brand new crystal clear window to replace the one that's been covered in dirt and grime for over 20 years.

if you try to fool urself into thinking new pups will make much of a difference in ur tone....ur sadly mistaken. most UGers will agree with me.

1) Don't go by what other people think

2) It's going to sound very different from a Squier Strat

3) It's not going to sound any better with the Line 6

4) Put the $100 towards a new amp fund and you'll when you hear it
#4
yea new amp would be good. the pickups are probably fine. a nice distortion/overdrive pedal might improve your sound too.
#5
^dirtbox into a spider? maybe u didn't see which amp he was using...

BAD idea. ur amp should either be used w/ a footswitch and presets or just ditch it and get a new one altogether.

the stock pups are alright and won't hold you back from too much, but they should be the last of ur worries right now.

I have a SG g400 also, I personally like the pickups in mine. I played the different Epi SG's as well as others brands in the price range when I bought mine. The pickups were one of the things that swayed me toward the G400.

Also I have made pickup changes in guitars in the past expecting great things only to find that I liked the pickup I started with.

Alright thanks guys I will save up $120 for a 15 Watt Marshall Amp.

Also I want a BOSS Pedal Board/Multi-Effects/Stomp box for my birthday from my parents so I guess I should get a Marshall.

The Line 6 wasn't worth $100

TS!!! WORSE move!!!

i guess we're turning this into a 'what amp' thread now....

lemme just start by saying THIS: unless you're willing to spend AT LEAST $250 to $350....don't even bother upgrading your amp. that also includes whatever money you can get for selling whatever amp you've got now. any less will be a waste of your time and money.

if you're willing to use that much on a new amp...then let us know what style you play mostly and the max you can spend.

slash_edit: ^ i dont think he's a troll....there's nothing uncommon about a noob wanting a marshall practice amp and multi FX pedal...now if he said he wanted a marshall amp with a zoom pedal running into a spider, then i'd be more suspicious.

Are you sure? all I need is a practice amp and I happen to like Marshall so I will get that.

Unless you guys think that a BOSS Stompbox will work with the clean channel/effect I will buy a new amp.

And I play Punk Rock and Rock, if that makes a difference.

Yes, but new pickups + crappy practice amps = not worth it.

wow, i've seen so many threads of noobs thinking MGs are real marshalls i actually get mad enough to KILL when i see other noobs assume that.....i must be gettin' bad. my irritability level has like skyrocketed on this site in the last 4 or 5 months....but i think i'm controllin' it somewhat nicely LOL.

So if it is not a 15 W Marshall and I shouldn't keep my Spider III what should I get?

On Musiciansfriend.com the 15 W Frontman got bad reviews.

That's because it's nearly as bad.

How much do you want to spend?
#21
TS, give us your budget. and like i said, if you're not willing to spend at least a few hundred you're just shafting yourself.

a small tube combo could pull off punk and hard rock. i suggest the BH alot for anything mid gain and under, and i'll suggest it again now. 5 watts tube with an OD pedal will cover everything you need. the tones you want pretty much require a tube sound.

The generic responce is generally a 5 watt tube amp.

Or if you're spending more money

A used 5150 or A Peavey Classic.

DON'T get a stompbox for a spider....it'll sound TERRIBLE. find a good crunch preset and EQ it the way you want it to be.....really there's not much hope for ur tone until you get a much nicer amp.....sorry....

for punk and hard rock a mid gain tube amp is what you want. peavey classics and blackhearts are your friends....but you can't afford to hang out w/ ur friends unfortunately :p

And you may be annoyed that you can't get the tone you want with the $$$ you have but that doesn't mean you don't have anywhere to go. I'm sure there is still loads to learn as far as technique goes.
#28
Wow I seriously am stuck here.

What if I just put it on clean and used the BOSS multi-effect (im not sure if that is also a stompbox.)?

If I can't I'm just going to say screw it and I will get the marshall.

I only will need this amp for 2 more years and then after that I will be able to get enough cash for a half stack, which would be good enough for practicing or playing with the band.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Marshall-MG100HDFXMG412-Slant-Cab-Half-Stack-Package?sku=482807

That would be all I need.

yea that's still a stompbox in theory. look at it this way:

the spider is a modelling amp. essentially a modelling pedal (like the boss one) turned into an amp. putting ANOTHER modelling pedal through that just causes a digital mess.

and as far as the marshall.....in two weeks you'll have another thread along the lines of : " hey i need a good pedal to put in front of my crappy amp....". the MG is equally as bad as the spider, don't believe us? use the damn search button. the MG is about as toneful as my last crap.

save ur money, you have the logical thinking and reasoning of an 8 year old in a chuck-e cheese ballpit.

actually, if you blow ur money on that god awful amp i won't even care, looks like you've already made up your mind. just don't come cryin' to us when you realize how much of a mistake you made.

Stay away from any MG, seriously, other than the ones less than 5 watts, they make good cheap practise ones.
