They're both different programs you can use which makes learning a song via tab alot easier, so you can hear it being played with the tab each time. You can tab things on it as well.

By feeding your guitar-tabs with 'PowerTabs', you will get immortal guitar playing...

honestly: these are tab-progs. powertabs is free, try it. Google it, damn!

The latter is what you will never become if you have spent more than a year here and still haven't figured out what the two aforementioned are. Now, that was a riddle, an insult, and a funny, all at the same time.

On a more serious note, they are midi transcription programs for tabs. This means that you can download tabs(these are special files designed in their respective programs) and see completely layered versions of them in the programs. You can also tab stuff yourself, so both are very helpful tools for songwriting. I recommend GP5 as it has a better interface and more functions(as far as I know), but get both as not all tabs are available to the one you use the most. You can also import midi-files into the program, but there is no fingering-logic attached, so the notes that appear are simply the correct pitches, while the frets can be completely random compared to how you would usually play the song.

You don't need both programs, Guitar Pro can play Powertab files...
