I am using a mahogany body blank with a quilted maple top. How thick should the top plate be considering I will be carving it up. I want to leave about a 1/4" of the maple around the top to simulate a binding. I will route the edge down to 1/4" and then carve from there. So how thick of a sheet of maple do I need, 1/2" 3/4"?

Thanks for the help.

it'll be difficult to find 3/4" thick maple. lp's are 5/8" at most.

Its not that hard to find a piece of maple that is 3/4" thick. 5/8" is only .125" thinner than 3/4. Find a piece of quilted maple that is 1 1/2" thick and bookmatch it.

Unless you're going for an extreme contours 1/2" is adequate

Buying a billet and bookmatching it is a good idea.. if you have 1-3 thousand dollars for one that cuts straight and tall enough to do it right! =]
