Okay guys i'm trying to piece together the top 10 most influential metal bands in sort of a 'history of metal' deal. I just wanted to get everybodies opinions to see who i'm missing.

Right now i've got the obvious

Black Sabbath
Ozzy Osbourne
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Pantera

But i need some help in determining the others. I've got a list of people like At The Gates, Megadeth, Guns n Roses, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Dream Theater, Morbid Angel, Testament, Sepultura...etc..etc but i can't quite decide which are deserving and which aren't.

Help appreciated!

Get rid of Ozzy and Pantera
probably include some proto black metal like venom or bathory, proto death metal like possessed (or even Death)
Skyclad for folk metal influence
Napalm Death for grind

In Flames and Iron Maiden, the two essential Is. Also, Dark Tranquility. They are kind of Amazing. But possibly most of all : Arch Enemy. Michael Amott's style is awesome, and Angela Gossow is inspiring many women to take the helm at the front of a band, and not sound like Lacuna Coil or some poop.

Death, since they basically were one of the first death metal bands.

Slayer for bridging the gap between thrash and death.

In Flames/At the Gates for the first Melodeath bands?

Edit: Why Pantera and why Arch Enemy? Just because there popular doesnt mean there influential.
#25
slayer, death, morbid angel, not megadeath(seeing as mustaine and hetfield invented the metallica sound), no ozzy, he was in Sabbath, and sadly, very sadly, not really pantera. groove metal is great, but pioneers and influential? i doubt top 10. most definitely Iron Maiden and Metallica.
#26
If the metal forum reaches a general consensus on this, i will eat a pair of shoes.

That having been said, methinks
-Sabbath
-Possessed
-Venom
-MOOtallica
-Pantera (thou shalt not question this decision)
-Suffocation
-Carcass
-Iron Maiden
-Priest
-Death

Although there is probably a large number of other bands out there like At The Gates, Celtic Frost and Limp Bizkit which I also coulda put there.

I just put limp bizkit there to see if you read the post. You did. Good on ya.

Edit: judging from the way things are going, it does look like Pantera has had a lot of influence on the modern metal scene. Maybe im just being a silly fanboy tho.
#27
Again, why Pantera?

Edit: I dont think they influenced that many people.

I think the term 'metal' is too broad to be used for this.

You would argue that Death, and Motley Crue are both influential in their own way, but no way could they be on the same list, because 9 times out of ten, a Motley Crue fan wouldnt like Death, therefore not think they're influential.. if that makes sense

Maybe if you split it up.. like top 5 most influential death metal bands, top 5 most influential heavy metal bands etc
#29
take out metallica, put in megadeth

The problem is most of you guys are biased towards bands you like, so you say they are influential.
#33
See but for instance I hate Slayer but I understand the importance they had on the modern metal scene

Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Metallica
Slayer
Pantera
Death
Carcass
Mayhem
In Flames

touches a little bit of everything and shows teh chain of mainstream-non-mainstream metal.

^ Replace In Flames with At the Gates, SOTS came out before Jester Race. Mayhem should be replaced by Venom. Carcass and maybe Pantera should be taken out. Put in Motley Crue and Napalm Death.

Metallica
Slayer
Motley Crue
Death
Napalm Death
Venom

Lets look at this through a genre-perspective:
1. Black Sabbath (all metal, founders of metal)
2. Mercyful Fate or Venom (early black metal)
3. Iron Maiden (NWOBHM)
4. Morbid Angel or Possessed (old school DM)
5. Metallica, Overkill, or Anthrax (Fistful of metal) (thrash metal)
6. Skyclad (Folk Metal)
7. Dream Theater or Queensryche (Prog Metal)
8. Suffocation or Immolation (Brutal DM)
9. Pentagram or St. Vitus (Doom metal)
10. Helloween (power metal)
11. Accept or Judas Priest (speed metal)
12. Atheist or Nocturnus (technical death metal)

had to go to at least 12. metal's such a varied genre, you need at least 12 if not 15 or else its incomplete.

EDIT:
13. Carcass's Heartwork or Dark Tranquillity's Sky Dancer (Melodic DM)
14. Bathory (2nd wave of black metal)
15. Napalm Death or Carcass (grindcore)

The only way to compile such a list is to ask every single metal musician on the planet to rate the most influential bands from 1 to 10. You all take a country each and get to work.

Go!

I want to try that while playing the opening riff to "Tempting Time".

0-0-0-13-0-0-0-0-13 or something like that alalalala but It;s so heavy and off time and awesome and you could not f**k anyone to it.

good list, but i'd probably put Sabbath up there for they're doom influence as well

i was considering that... but i didn't want to have the same bands everywhere. besides, sabbath influenced everything metal, so inherently doom as well. Besides Pentagram & St. Vitus more defined doom whereas Sabbath did some doom, some heavy metal, some proto-speed metal, some thrashy riffs, etc.
