I need to know if the 30 + a od pedal will be heavy enough for metal, shred. And yes, I know everyone says the valveking sucks but im not looking for professional tone, just upgrading from a Spider. And if the valveking blows so bad, why doesnt any recommend a high gain tube amp in the 500-700 range?

The VK doesn't actually blow at all, it's just not the best amp compared to other tube amps; as a first tube amp it's not a bad choice at all.

So then whats better than it for its price range?

for metal? youd need to put a bit of money into a VK to get a good shred tone ie: OD+speaker swap (Veteran 30's are 40 bucks from warehouse speakers) + an eq pedal.
but if you need a amp that does metal right out of the box, a b52 at is a good choice.

Sure, plenty, what major city are you near? VK's are $400 new. $500-700 = a used amp far superior to the VK. (not bashing, just stating fact...)
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

For metal the Randall RG50TC is pretty good and the B-52 AT-112 has a pretty good reputation however the VK can get pretty brutal if you set it up right so don't dismiss it unless yo've played all three.

Great, thanks. I finally get a VK question answered without some one saying that they're absolute garbage when I know they're really not. At least I got some other suggestions for amps.

uhm. What major city do you leave near? "Wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask"...

well, there not absolute garbage. It's just that there are better amps out there, around the same price. Peavey classic's, Randall rg's, B-52 at's, Crate v's/palominos.

but i still dislike them.

Tried Bakerfield and Fresno, but for a drive to LA these are maybe worth consideration.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/msg/757580927.html Ampeg 60 watt $450 (need a good metal pedal I believe...)
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/msg/756337138.html BOO YAH! Has to come down in price tho...
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/msg/753457091.html B 52 100 watt.

You get my point. Keep searching your closer craigslist sites but these are pretty good amps for the money. Especially if you aren't looking for pro tone. You just may end up with it after all in your budget. Good luck.
