they are 2 completely different basses, the split single coils on the p bass give a nice thump and the single coils are clearer but i dnt like the tone of them and V.M. squiers arent that bad infact they are better then some MIMs i would take the V.M. squier p bass myself

Are you sure you posted the right bass?

Because the Geddy Lee is a far superior instrument.

who are your three favorite bass players?
classic rock is a very wide genre, from Jack Bruce to Chris Squire.
those 2 alone sound incredibly different.
and what is your price range?
are you getting an amp?
and by the way, Squiers are pretty good in VM and CV.

If you're looking at the Geddy Lee, go for it, but if you're after a punchy precision sound, look at a higher end Fender if you've got the money for the geddy.

How do you physically download an album? Like run your computer off a dynamo on an exercise bike?

i like punk, but i play in a classic rock band
my top 3 bassists would be Matt Freeman, Chris #2 and either Flea or Tim Commerford
price range goes up to the geddylee bass
and i have a marshall mb30 but my band uses a rehearsal room so i usually end up usin Trace Elliot amps

This is just stupid...they don't really compare. If you like the neck on a GL you'll probably hate P necks anyway.

What's your budget, what instrument do you currently play, what do you like about it and what do you want to sound like?

For the money you're talking, you'd want a warwick corvette if you can afford it, beautiful tone and a nice looking instrument. http://www.thomann.de/ie/warwick_corvette_std_4_nt_bh.htm
If it's just between those two, the geddy lee is great and will probably serve you better if you play a variety of styles as it's a jazz bass.
The VM is also good value for money, but if you were going to get a P-bass you'd want something more high end, like a MIA fender.

you want a Jazz. the 2 bassists I recognized instantly have both used Jazz basses.
you will have to try the Warwick they feel rather square in comparison to a jazz. you may hate the feel, but you may like it.
I think a Warwick may fit, probably a Corvette, but until you trys one a Jazz will be the best choice.

A P-Bass is not a downgrade, as both the P and J basses are two completely different beasts. It's a tonality swap if anything.
