when politics and music combine, Sharpie isn't the sharpest tool in the shed....

hey i'm a huge fan of the RATM sound, i can feel the aggression of Zach De La Rocha's opinions of the government through the music, but i'm ashamed to say i'm basically politically dumb. i know what i feel is right and fair and necessary in the political world, but cannot say that i know which side i'm on if any. so this leads to my next point:

group presentation of influential modern (btw early 90s and now) rock band. i'm not changing the band so don't suggest that, most of the project is done and will be ready to present by the end of the next week.

one member of our group is having trouble w/ the political aspect of the band, she (as well as I) do not know what specifically to talk about in this part of the presentation. and obviously politics is a HUGE part of RATM. i just want suggestions and tips of a way to organize this section. i want to talk about what side they're on, what values and beliefs they hold strongest, their acts of protest (other than the music) that they've done and anything else to make sure this section doesn't flop. right now i'm googling as much as i can but any tips are appreciated.

i hope it's not a crime to love a politically based band and not even know what side you're on. but if it is, don't be too harsh.

For some reason the thread title reminded me of that retarded dinosaur in The Land Before Time.

RATM is my favorite band ever, unfortunately, I only was able to see them live one time, but that is beside the point...

RATM is, in terms of the politcal spectrum, way to the left, and I'm not talking about democrats, i'm talking WAY to the left. They would probably call themselves democratic socialists, in terms of their beliefs. They are influenced a lot by far leftist thinkers such as Noam Chomsky or Karl Marx, and also people who are not as radical but still just as influential, such as MLK Jr or Malcolm X. Basically, they are very critical of US foreign and trade policies, citing many of them as oppressive and hurtful of the 'little guys.' They are very against the corporate agenda that seems to have infiltrated the american political and economic system. Basically, they are very much against the U.S. political system because it offers no alternatives to 2 candidates. It's like, whoever has the most money, wins. So yeah, i'm not sure if that helps or not, but yeah, I love talking politics. Feel free to message me more about this.

Not at all. And if anyone reams you for it they just want attention.

I would go through their lyrics and pick out certain ones that stick out, then do a brief analysis on the them.

The lie is my expense
The scope with my desire
The party blessed me with its future
And i protect it with fire
I am the nina, the pinta, the santa maria
The noose and the rapist, the fields overseer
The agents of orange
The priests of hiroshima
The cost of my desire
Sleep now in the fire

I think this one would work really well. I have no idea what the nina, pinta or santa maria are, but the rest is pretty much about the elite of America holding the world hostage with nuclear arms. See? A little google and you'll be fine.

I think the whole refering to Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria thing reflects how the Western Europeans basically raped the North American continent for all that it was worth. Let's look at it. Columbus brought news of 'a great new land full of fertile soil'. However, there was a catch. It was full of native barbarians. So, what do the Europeans do with them? Why exterminate them, of course! And it may not be increadably well known now, but there were many massacres of native americans at the hands of the 'far superior Europeans'.

Youtube some videos of Zach talking about his beliefs. In The Battle Of Mexico City he does a pretty cool interview with Noam Chomsky too.

(in the process of finishing the test)

but they don't really let you 'pick an choose' in politics to make yourself some kind of super-everything-i-believe-is-positive political affiliation.

there were a handful of questions that i didn't know exactly what they were asking so i obviously couldn't answer 'neutral' obviously....but i'm towards the middle which doesn't surprise me. i see ideas that i like on BOTH sides and ideas that i DON'T on both sides
