Randy Rhoads used legato almost exclusively for fast playing. He often mixed the minor pentatonic with the natural minor scale. He often used trills in his arpeggios, starting a semitone below the chord tone and trilling on and off the chord tone. He was (obviously) influenced by classical music and pioneered "double tapping".
