I'm thinking the 20+ year old 6L6GC tubes in my Peavey need to go. But I have no idea what to look for, and can't blow a whole lot of money. Can someone suggest me quality tubes that will give me a clear, cutting sound as opposed to a dark one?

Possibly check out Tung Sol 6L6s.. But all paired power amp tubes are relatively expensive..

Depending on how you play and what your amp settings are, changing the preamp tubes might have more of an effect on your sound...

Even if it's just 1 or two in the right spots..

Ah, it's a hybrid amp. It has no preamp tubes.

SED =C= 6L6s are currently the best on the market, well of the "cheap" ones at least.

On most amps it doesn't but some amps like Bugera it does if you do it yourself.

Yeah, it's an '84 Peavey Heritage VTX 212. There are plenty of people reviewing it on Harmony Central that say they still have the original tubes and it sounds fine, but I want to try and see if I can clear up the tone a bit.

You just pull them straight down and out, you might have to wiggle them a bit to loosen them up, but don't try to turn them like a lightbulb.

Yes, you need to order them in pairs, can find these anywhere tubes are sold.

JJ's and Winged C's are good for the cheaper tubes.

RCA 6L6's are incredible, but pricey.

6L6's may be better for you than 6L6GC's. They are supposed to be brighter than the GC's. And it never hurts to have an extra pair/quad laying around.

True, I only suggested them because he wanted "clear cutting as opposed to dark". I prefer the GC's too.

exactlly man

and if you want that Marshall sound he can go for the EL34s, but im really not a fan of those. although some of the Laney valve heads sound pretty good with EL34s in them.
