I'm considering selling my 5150 and purchasing a JSX.
I want the extra versatility.
But i have a question:

With a boost, would i be able to push the crunch channel to give me a nice tight death metal rythym tone and just use the ultra channel for leads?

Wouldnt look to the JSX if your looking for rhythm tones... The one I demo'ed just fell short with any rhythm playing i threw at it. If you looking for a more all-a-rounder go for the Triple...

Also the Tripple XXX would be better for a hardcore metal tone on the crunch channel since its higher gain than the jsx on the crunch channel. If I were you I would try to run it the opisite way, use the Ultra for the rythm tones and the crunch maxed out with the mids boosted for lead work, since the ultra channel is what really sets these amps apart. You could aways use a tube screamer to push the crunch channel alittle more, but believe me on the triple it has quite a bit of gain on tap, at 9:00 its in solid JCM 800 terittory on the lower gain channel.

Im back to getting the XXX. At first the Vypyrs were coming out, and i was stoked about trying them, so i did, and...they are amazing. BUT not for me. So im back to the XXX.

I relize i may not have the $$ for the 120w combo, so i have one question for those of you who own the super 40s.

How similar is the ultra channel compared to the higher wattage models? Im asking because there are a tube or two less in the 40s and im curious to know how it sounds.

Also since its so much lower wattage than the others, how does it sound at louder volumes?

I've got the super 40. It has 4 preamp tubes, isn't that the same as the other models?

Anyway without playing the higher wattage ones, you can still have as much gain as you will ever want. And with my weber attenuator it sounds better cranked imo(just slightly looser bass), but for death metal or something you probably don't want to crank it all that much.
#86
i could have sworn the 40s had one less tube, but oh well, you should know. Do you think i should look for EFX or without? All i mainly use is reverb and delay, and i have a Boss DD-6 for that.

Since this is a thread about Peavey XXXs i have a question. Im looking for metal amp(Pantera, A7X, BFMV) and im looking at one of eBay for around 300-350$. Is this a good deal, and will it fit my music?

Oh, I also like to play hard rock, and stuff like Nirvana, Metallica, Megadeth, EVH.

well, BFMV use Mesa Triple Recs and Peavey 6505's, but a XXX will do well

Yes 100% sure, i don't know why you guys think it only has 2.

If it had two then it wouldn't have as much gain as the higher wattage ones, which i think is what Bjovi was getting at for the presumed difference in sound.

I actually have the amp, mine has 3 Electro Harmonix 12AX7's and 1 Sovtec LP in the phase inverter. And then 2 Mesa EL-34's.

Yeah, well I dont really play heavy sounding stuff like BFMV all the time. Kinda' mix Dimebag with Synyster Gates and you'll kinda' get how I play.
#93
still the XXX.

Syn Gates has an incredibly bright lead tone, to the 6505 might be too dark, as well as the rhythm tone of A7X isn't really the darkest. Go XXX.

The 6505 isn't nearly as versatile since it only has 2 channels, and it has that dark and fizzy metal tone. And if you play the different kinds of A7X, you should know that their music style is uber ****in versatile and all over the place.

Got bored today... So I decide to take my Ultra apart to see what makes her tick and see what I could tweak. While doing that I also ended up re-finishing her as well lol

Does the peavey logo light up? The controls look slick too, are they stock?

Thanks...

Yup the logo lights up Red, Green and Yellow to show what channel your on. And the silver and black knobs are stockers, the three black metal ones I added to mix things up a bit.

Peavey Ultra 60w 112 combo.

Drastic volume reduction, attempted to fix, no signs of burning or damage, replaced 6l6 socket board, no use. It doesn't say he replaced the tubes, but I'm assuming that would have been the first thing he would have done...

What could be the problem??

I forgot to post in this thread after my ultra came. I have to say it exceeded my expectations. With the gain booston the ultra channel I never have to go past 12 o clock. The clean is awesome too. The only thing is that I am thinking of buying a maxon ts808 to get a bluesy sound out of it. Do you guys think it is a good idea?
#107
Yeah i think i'm gonna get a maxon too, my badmonkey isn't bad tho.

And hey have any of you guys done speaker swaps on ur triple xxx's? I want more of a british tone and was thinking of some of those greenbacks from warehouse speakers.
#108
^the stock speakers on the Triples and the JSX are Vintage 30 clones, and really they are a decent clones, this is buy far the best peavey speaker alot of them are not that great but Chrome Shefields are decent.

I think EL-34's.

And I changed out the Sheffield for a Warehouse Vet. 30, and JohnBryant yeah they are pretty similar speakers, but the Vet30 sounds a bit more professional quality tone.

I'm also thinking of selling my triple xxx, because I don't know if its my SG or what(most likely the Burstbucker pro), but the tone is too thin, I'm gonna have to get a les paul and if that doesn't fix it then I'm gonna say bye bye birdie lol.
#111
well, SG's have fairly thin mahogany bodys, so that could have some to do with it also. Maybe swap out the pickup with something with higher output. if you play al ot of heavier stuff, the 500T is good.

and from what i hear the V30 isnt the best speaker for the XXX, so maybe rechange?

+1. I like the Texas Heats too. The V12 Legends as well.
I use V30's as well as 100 watt Rockdrivers with my JSX. The crunchy breakup and big upper mids of the V30's work well in combination with the clear sounding high wattage Rockdrivers. Kind of the best of both worlds.

Peavey XXX.
(2x12 Combo)

my settigns:

CLean-
Bass 1:30
mid 1:00
trebble dimed
Volume around 9
(its kind of bright and twangy
good for stuff like one by metallica)

Ulltra-
Gain 1:00
Bass 2:15
Mid 2:00
Treble 3:00
Volume around 12 for just a bit of poweramp distortion
(mid heavy, think lamb of god or slayer)

Ultra-
Gain 1:00
Bass 3:00
Mid 10:30
Treble 2:30
Volume 1:00
(slightly scooped, the speakers bring in some heavy
mids too tho, at the right master volume think slipknot)

WELL....
i'm in the market for new tubes, and new speakers
2x12 cab with the XXX 2x12 combo speakers.
what would best compliment these settings tube wise,
and speaker wise?

Just as heavy as the other triple xxx's lol!

And mine isn't too dark right now with my sg, so I'm gonna get some JJ preamp tubes and see if it helps.

I love my Ultra plus 120..

When i tune to standard i can get a really nice thrash metal sound on the ultra channel, very middy. Mids to about 6.5-7.5 and treb about 8-9. Bass around 5-6.

But if i drop the tuning on my guitar down to C# or lower, that's where it really shines. I dropped to A once and the mids made it growl like hell, balls to the wall gain. It sounds almost like a recto, it definitely has the low end for it.. the recto sounds a little more "chunky" though.

I'm not a fan of clean in general, but i LOVE the clean channel when i add some chorus from my Boss CE-3. sounds nice and shimmery and smooth. I'm going to get an mxr 10 band eq in the future to make it even better.

The crunch is nice for regular rock, i've used it alot too.

my ultra plus just died. im freaking out right now and i made a thread on it i have a gig in a week UYFTRWEIFRU230R
