I have a gibson explorer and a Laney VH100R. But I can't seem to get that tight crispness out of it. So would it be better to get new tubes or different pickups?

Neither, an EQ pedal should be the first thing you invest in.

What kind of valves are in there already?

If they're Sovteks, change them. What EQ settings are you using?
A dwarf might hear you. What then?

THere's your problem then, that's going to sound like breaking glass on a VH.

Try:

Bass 6
Mids 6
Treble 4
Presence 4

As a starting point. What are your gain and drive knobs set to?

Gain is set at 8 and drive is at 6.5.

but i like having the presence and the the treb up for better crunch

Mids are what will give you the crunch.

Just turn all the EQ knobs to 5, use your ears and start all over again.

Try turning the resonance switch on too.

I'll do that thanks. Anything else that would help ampwise or guitarwise.

It's very easy to make things worse with a 10-band unless you know what you're doing, judging by his old settings I think he'd do better to lay off the EQ pedal until he's got a nice tone dialled in on the amp, then add the pedal when he needs to do some fine tuning.
