They are both right at $700 bucks..and I only have $400..

He also has a JCM 2000 for $900

I'd go with the Laney myself but I already have the 50w version so I may be biased, does the JCM have a clean channel and do you need one?

I dont really need cleans..I have a peavey that does all that..

I was looking into a 5150 ..but these two amps seem like a safe investment.
I dont have alot of experience with tube heads so i came here for good advice.

I think i may be a bit biased myself..because i was really impressed when i read
that Laney are 100% hand made...i hope its true.

Personally, most likely the Laney, I've never been a huge fan of Marshalls
Edit: I have a Peavey 6505+ head (essentially a 5150 II) and I think it kicks the Laney and Marshall's asses, I love the really raw tone

If you don't need cleans then the Laney wins by a mile, go for it!

It kicks its ass at metal. The JCM kicks its ass at rock and classic rock and anything else.

What music do you play?

What JCM800 is it? Dual channel or singel channel? Vertical or horizontal inputs? 100 or 50W?

ok you posted JCM900 in the title, and JCM800 in the poll.

If its the 900, I'd go for the Laney. I've never really liked the 900's, they really sacrifice the balls and girth of the JCM800 tone for more gain.

As for JCM800 and 2000, the models matter. If its a single channel vertical input 800, jump on it. Seriously, great amplifiers. If its a 2000, the DSL's are ok, the lead channel sucks, but no one should ever buy a marshall for fizzy buzzing bees preamp tones, and the TSLs are even worse. Otherwise the DSL 50 and 100 are pretty decent overall amps.

The JCM 2000 TSL is a great amp, as well as the DSL. both of those would be great choices.
.
Just remember the marshalls are very organic amps and if you are a cruddy player the marshall will not hide any imperfections/mistakes in your playing.
