I'm nowhere close to being able to play necro but if I did practice the riffs/solos would they drastically improve my technique/speed?
#3
youll get better at playing Necrophagist songs, and most necrophagist songs are reeaaal technical and have physically demanding solos, so yes your technique will improve.
#4
You will not become a better guitarist. You will only get better at playing Necrophagist.

Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

I don't recommend it. There are other songs that would help you more. Once you get better, they will help you progress, but if you are nowhere close to being able to do it, I think there are much better ways to improve your technique.
#7
I think that it can help improve your technique, but it won't make you a better guitarist in anyway, it'll just help your technique towards very technical and challenging metal guitar parts.

It's not like if you practice sweeps or anything...you'll get better

Yes, you will become a better guitarist, but as (burrit0) said, you should'nt just limit yourself to Necrophagist.

But if I got better at necro wouldn't that make a lot of other stuff easier?

What other songs could help me improve more? Right now I'm practicing Culinary Hyperversity and it's ridiculously hard. Right in the middle of the riff it just goes into a sweep at the lower part of the neck.
#11
you mean higher part of the neck, plus why would you hinder yourself by jumping in at the deep end instead of working yourself up to it. youll end up playing sloppy trying to keep up to speed with necrophagist without building up your technique sufficiently before hand

This is effectively what I was trying to say. What songs can you play well now? It'll help me decide what to recommend.

Oh ya right

Well of course I'm playing it slow first and building speed. What's the difference between playing this song and practicing some exercises?

Play some Venom instead, save yourself the effort lad.
Quote by Ultraussie
I want to try that while playing the opening riff to "Tempting Time".

0-0-0-13-0-0-0-0-13 or something like that alalalala but It;s so heavy and off time and awesome and you could not f**k anyone to it.

Not necessarily true. Your technique will improve drastically and I guarantee that it will improve your skills as a guitarist. Granted, there are many other aspects of the guitar that it won't help you out with, but that is beside the point.

The only songs that I can play pretty well are:

Death-Spirit Crusher(not all of it tho)
Burzum-War
Opeth-The night and the silent water

These are the ones I actually put effort into learning. I know a few more licks and riffs but they are sloppy.
#17
Try playing some more Death songs first, like Crytsal Mountain or Lack Of Comprehension. Then move onto to something like Necrophagist.
#20
Yes it will

I'm speaking out of experience here, taking the time to learn the riffs one by one is worth it, since you will have to practice a lot of techniques and wrap your mind around using the proper positions and stuff like that.

Still, if it's way too hard, you probably aren't ready for it

I actually have to say, if you want to get yourself out of a rut where all you're playing is blues rock rip off Slash solo's, and you wanna learn how to do solo's like Necrophagist does, the best way IMO is to learn a few of their songs/solos and you will improve better as a metal guitarist for sure.
#24
I think if you just practice you will get better. If you just play Necrophagist, you will trap yourself in a corner and will probably only be able to play that stuff.

Being versatile is usually awesome, and I hope you feel the same way.
#25
^ Of course my man

I hope you guys don't think I'm only playing that. I'll still be practicing other stuff like theory scales etc
#26
One year ago I would have said no, but I used to really suck at playing guitar until I only focused on playing Malmsteen, especially Far Beyond the Sun, when I got it down completely I found myself much better of a guitarist.

I have 2 FBTS covers on my profile, one which was done like 8 months ago (the first two minutes) and one done not so long ago (full song) and you can see how i kind of improved.

So I would say that playing Necro songs would make you better.

Yeah that will help, but you gotta get a feel for it all first.. don't just try to become a machine overnight you know.

Everything takes soo much time. How long have you been playing?

Playing pretty much anything willl make you improve. It's just that you'll only improve at the thing you're practicing.
#31
If you're going to learn Necrophagist, don't start with Culinary Hypervisity. Learn to crawl before you run. Extreme Unction is by far Necrophagist's easiest song..

It'll teach you how to sweep.

If that's your idea of being "better", then yes, you'll be better.

Crystal Mountain by Death seems like a fine recommendation. It has some stuff in it that will help your technique. My advice though is just to play songs you like. Your technique will come with time, and as it improves you can worry more about improving it.

Crystal Mountain is an awesome recommendation. The song isn't too hard and it will definitely help.

Learning Necrophagist, as part of a healthy diet of basic scale knowledge and maybe some other, easier songs will help you improve your guitar skills.

All this people saying "It'll just help you learn Necrophagist" are idiots. It's going to help with your picking speed, picking precision, finger positioning, aswel as opening your mind to OTHER chords, scales and finger positions that you can use in your own songs. Speaking from experience, trying to learn some BTBAM songs helped my bass playing dramatically, and then doesn't mean I now sound like BTBAM.
#35
^That's true, the Diminished Scale and the Harmonic Minor scale I learned mostly from learning Necrophagist songs.

it wont teach u to sweep... you might think you are but its nowhere near... no, learning necrophagist helps you realise you are sloppy as hell... my one student played it continuously... that and nevermore... and his technique was sloppy and he didnt know what he was playing or why... but if u really wanna do it... then go for it. its all good and somehow it'll teach you how to do those techniques to an extent... have fun... oh, you might wanna stay away from learning that one track called tendonitis loves carpal tunnel syndrome

It will either help your technique, or frustate you vigorously, as it did to me.

However, finally getting how to play the main riff of "Diminished to B"= Joyous Rapture.

Not even having enough frets to play the solo to fermented offal discharge= dissapointment

Finding out that necrophagist, and a couple other awesome, brutal bands are playing at your town in one concert, but did it in the only 19+ venue in the entire tour= Suicidal thoughts.
