So, I've got this fretless bass that has the most awful tone on earth. It's hella comfortable and plays really well but the sounds is really bad. What could be done to save my bass?
It's a P/J combination and i was thinking new pickups were certainly in order. What would you suggest to fatten up my tone?

new pickups would help but what kind of amp do you have? the amp is where almost all of your tone comes from
BASS GEAR:
Fender Bassman 250 2x10
Squier MB-5
Tanglewood Premier TW155 acoustic bass

GUITAR GEAR:
Ibanez ART300
Fender GDC-200SCE
Peavey studio chorus 70

PEDALS:
Ibanez SM-7
Ibanez PH-7
DOD Bass Chorus

what amp are you using? a persons amp is the biggest factor in their tone, so if you have a crappy amp, you will more than likely have crappy overall tone, and new pups wont do much to change that.

With my band, i run through a Peavey TNT 115 but i mostly use it at home with ampeg SVX on my computer. So bassically, an svt or a ba500

the peavey i've got a sweet tone out of for playing with the band, except i usually use a different bass for that and with SVX, i boost low and mids around 300Hz
