Hello pit,

I've been playing guitar now for about two years and I would consider myself to be at an average skill level

The thing is, is that I only know how to read tablature and I really want to learn theory so I actually know and understand what I am playing.

My school (Melville Senior High incase someone here goes there :P) has a specialist music program and I thinking about auditioning to join.

So pit what song do you think I should play for the audition?

You have to audition to join the music class?

I don't know, whatever song you play best?
#4
if you play guitar then talk to the examiners and find out there favorite music and play a song that they like (extra brown nosing) then go on a mad solo after

Anything by Dream Theater.

I usually get 18/19 out of 20 for assessments for DT songs.

I say this for everyone: Cliffs of Dover. I consider it intermediate except for the faster parts.

Try some RHCP, and everyone likes Classical Gas

Lol. Melville isnt really that great a school for music dude. Though which school band are u intending to join after this? That said though, dont do anything which is popular (like Green Day... not that anyone should even attempt playing their songs, theyre too hard!!! ) and try some jazz songs. or just do a cover of a rock song which is somewhat technically difficult. Mabye even a cover of a Zepp Tune.

What year are u in right now anyways?

wtf dude. year 8's rarely have any talent (unless that person has been playing their whole life) so im sure u'd be able to get in with pretty much any song. U dont really need to impress the teachers. though if u do want to, then make ur own composition (not just random riffs)

Gd with ur 'audition'. though i doubt theres gonna be much competition... unless there happens to be another 100 year 8's who can shred like pros

That's quite a dumb generalization to make.

Vivaldi- Four seasons, paul gilbert style!
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/p/paul_gilbert/four_seasons_tab.htm

its classical, how could they argue?

Paul Gilbert style is not classical.

Just stick to what you know. If you're most familiar with rock/metal, choose a standard song from that style. Don't choose jazz or classical if you have no experience with them.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Yes, but Vivaldi is a classical composer, and The four seasons is a classical piece of music. Paul Gilbert just arranged The four seasons for guitar the best he could.

The final result of Paul Gilbert's arrangement strips the original baroque symphony of its characteristics while creating new ones based on the melodies. It is interpreted into a rock song and has no remaining classical value.

I'm not trying to be negative here. It's just not classical, nor should it have to be. In reality, this type of reinterpretation occurs all the time. Musicians frequently take a piece of music from one genre and interpret it as another. Everything from metal versions of Oops I Did It Again to samba versions of Beethoven's 4th, music is always being reinterpreted. However, it would be wrong to consider these new interpretations as part of the original style.

I know where you are coming from, to be honest, I would have no idea what he was playing if he didnt say it. But it is still a cool song he put together, and besides, the tryout does not have to play a classical piece. For true old school :Paganini Caprice 24, quite long, but amazing.

I didn't comment on the quality of Paul Gilbert's arrangement, only the inherent shift in style.

Without trying to be rude, you would have no idea probably because you're not familiar with classical music, which is fine. It is just not part of your schema.

And I know the audition isn't strictly classical, which is why I recommended playing what he is familiar with.

Well, what I meant by "I would have no idea what he was playing" was that it sounds nothing at all like The Four Seasons, not enough to be recognizable by my ears at least.

Well, it shares the theme. But a musician can be very liberal in terms of how he articulates the melodies during a reinterpretation.
