So I plug into my Bugera for the first time in a few days (I've been working so I can only practice late, which means I have to use my toneport and headphones), and I was astonished when I plugged in. Totally thin sound. Disgusting.

Upon further investigation, I found out that somehow the mid knob got turned from about 7 all the way down to 2. It was horrid. I seriously lost faith in my amp for a few minutes.

Anyone else HATE scooped mids? I think I may just make a group for this or something

Yeah i did that for fun on my Supersonic

I put treble and bass to 10 and mids to 0

I dont know how Metallica could deal with listening to that.

it depends on the the general sound of your pickups and amp, my friend used to do that when he had his line 6 uber metal pedal, and it sounded not bad, i kinda do it too, i like it more for really heavy distortion though, it doens't sound that great on lighter distortion

Mid scooping is for noobs. I did it when i was first starting out. Now I know better. I usually have my mids slightly higher than my treble.

i agree on the keeping the Mids right above the treble

if my mids are on 7, my treble would be on 5 or so.
it keeps the noise down and gives you a better crunch tone

By the way, Metallica haven't scooped their mids since the Black Album.

Kirk even said himself that he can't believe how much better it sounded once they stopped.

ewwwww, scooped mids

I actually like my mids boosted a bit, but thats only if I'm playing blues or some warm cleam stuff. Usually have bass at 10, mids at 6 or 7, and treble at 4

strange eh?

try putting your bass on 6 or 7 and turn off mids completely, gain all the way up. if that still doesnt sound right, try turning down your gain to 7 or 8
#24
scooping your mids doesn't mean your tone will be heavier, i hate when people say that

It will just be more muddy and ****tier. Want a heavier tone, boost the lows, mids and keep the highs low, thats what i do and it sounds heavy as ****.

Damn why does everyone keep saying that ???

Glad to know I'm not the only one who really hates mids scooped. I've been playing and holy god, I don't know how people LIKE that sound. It's just so... Flat? Lifeless? I have no idea, it's just bad. I've been experimenting and I've come to the conclusion scooping the mids is the quickest way to destroy your tone. I can't even practice without them. Even with lots of gain or what people are saying, it just sounds so dull.

i've always wondered...on amps with only a treble and bass EQ, are the mids always scooped? or do the treble and bass also affect the mids

i hate it too, i usually have my mids at around 5, treble at 10 and bass at 2 but this is because i have a vox and vox amps have the most mid rangey tones of any amps, i dont know how metallica pulled off the scooped sound but they did.

i used to scoop the hell out of my mids... but i'm adding a little more nowadays. my style has also changed a bit haha.

On my amp, my mids are at 7.5.
my DF-7 is a bit complicated though. it has the mid frequency, and the mid level. the frequency is at about 10 o'clock, and the level is slightly below that.. kind hard to explain.. sorry guys..

on the flip side of things...
I hate when people max out mids, or come close to it. Blech.. sounds like crap to me.

They have the treble and bass affect the midrange.
For both distorted and clean sounds I have my bass at 3, my mids at 5-6, and my treble at 10 with a bass cut on my guitar and a treble boost on my amp. Sounds great.

For me I like the crunch that the mids provide.

I like to set my bass and treble near 10 and set the mids around 7.

I've heard musicians argue that guitarists that play powerchord driven
rhythms need to scoop the tones because the guitar gets lost in the mix.

I honestly don't understand. For example..if you play metal and you have a
Les Paul tuned down to drop-C and you've got a 58 for the lowest string..
its seems to me that scooping it would cause it to cause more conflict with
the Bass player because Les Pauls can get really low.

But..these Les Paul drop tuned players swear that scooping creates
dissonance with the bass.
