I'm looking for a good, reliable, decent, economical car. The two choices I have found today are a 1997 3.0 v6 automatic mercury sable and a 1993 1.9 4-cylinder automatic ford escort. The Sable is in excellent condition, but it has less gas mileage. I think its around 24 or so. The Escort is in decent condition and gas mileage is great. I think around 30, maybe more. I really don't want one that old though, it seems like its in good condition, but it has a little noise when its driving that makes me nervous.
I really like the Mercury and I trust it more , but I know the Ford has better gas mileage and I really don't have alot of faith in it.

Which one do you guys think I should get?? Could someone post the actual MPGS for each car?? Also the price range each one should be in?? If anyone has any experience with either of these cars, please reply. Any advice at all would be great.

You do know that Ford owns Mercury, don't you?

Go for the newer one, it should have less problems in the future (hopefully)

the 3 liter Ford V6 is much more durable than the 1.9L four cylinder.
unless you drive tons of miles, sacrifice the fuel economy.

I use to have a '96 Escort.
It was one great car but the looks weren't so good.
I've got about 28 mpg.

I can't tell you a lot about the sable, but with gas being 4 a gallon I'd go with the Escort.
The good times are killing me.

duratec has 200 horsepower and has more power in high rpms. the vulcan has 145 but has more in low end torque and is one of the most reliable motors ford ever built. i have a taurus with the vulcan and have never had any major trouble with it.
#15
they aren't the same, the escort is smaller. a sable is the same thing as a taurus. i hate them. Alot. and im a ford guy.

i say buy a 87-93 four cyl mustang. great milage great looks, and they're reliable.

but bewteen the two: Escort

thats good. I've read where it has problems with park and stuff, where the pin won't lock in. Is this the usual problem or something else with the tranny??

take it for a test drive you can usually tell if its starting to have problems if it slams into gear or takes a bit to engage into gear which i think is the most common thing. if you get the sable or want look some things up check out www.taurusclub.com theres some good advice on there for these cars.

Also, would the 1.9 at 85 horsepower be enough for southern indiana. We've got alot of hills and windy roads here. would I be pushing the engine too much??

I was going to say go for the better fuel economy, but it's quite a few years difference in age, so I'd go with the newer car simply because it'll last you longer and cost you less in maintenance, although i bit more in fuel.

i've heard some bad stuff about the tranny in the sable. but i've also heard the escort goes through timing belts as well.

My mum drove her 1990 Escort for 16 years and put 350,000 miles on it. She never had any major problems. So I'm going to say Escort.

If I were you though I would go look for a Honda.

I bought a '95 Escort manual about 3 months ago and so far it's been okay. Gas mileage for me is more like 35-40, but that's because it's a manual and I drive it like a granny and coast everywhere. I've had to minor repairs a few times already, which I wasn't expecting and is a bit disappointing. The car is definitely not going to die on you, though. It will be probably keep going up to a good 250,000 miles, with minor repairs now and then.

I really like mine. I have a thing for very basic, simple cars and this one is about as basic as they come. And it being that way means repairs are very easy to do, and parts are quite cheap. So even if yours does have problems, they won't turn into any kind of big ordeal.
We're only strays.

The cheaper one which is in better shape is the better buy.

However, if you're looking for the BEST buy, it can be found at http://www.bestbuy.com
They have several conveniently located stores near you as well. Good luck and have a nice day!
