Use a tube screamer type pedal as a clean boost. The bad monkey is really popular for this but I've never tried it. The marshall blues breaker pedal has a resonable clean boost too and because you are in the UK you should be able to get it pretty cheap.
Not taking any online orders.

try using the compression on the amp, it adds more gain and sustain
also, i find that the UK 70's only sounds really good when you turn up the volume

+1, just turn it up really loud when nobody's home, then you get a wonderful ACDC tone.

Most overdrive pedals work well for a boost. I have a cheap Behringer overdrive set to low gain with the level up a bit. It works great for boosting. Any decent overdrive will do if my crap one will do it.
